ALT A digital illustration shows a transition from old encryption standards to new encryption standards. On the left, an outdated server is connected to symbols and codes. In the center, a large, futuristic quantum computer is depicted. On the right, a shield represents the new encryption standards, with symbols indicating modern data security. The background features a binary code theme.
ALT A person in protective clothing places items into a large, circular container emitting vapor inside a cryopreservation chamber.
ALT A humorous poster is pinned to a corkboard. The top reads "Do you have a mole problem?" Below are illustrations: a person with a thoughtful expression and a mole character beside them. The bottom says "Use this number" with tear-off strips containing Avogadro's number.
ALT Two men face away from the camera, pointing to diagrams written on a whiteboard.
ALT Chemical diagram on the left shows two different structures: one green, displaying a benzene ring connected to a secondary amine, and one orange, depicting a benzene ring connected to a bicyclic structure with a secondary amine. On the right, the corresponding 3D shapes are illustrated in a protein environment, colored green and orange respectively, within complex folded structures.
ALT Man wearing protective goggles stands in a lab.
ALT Close-up of a single chip that houses up to 300 tiny ring-shaped resonators that form the heart of the new microcomb technology.
ALT A close-up of a silicon wafer displaying an array of microchips. The surface has a reflective, iridescent pattern with various colors visible across the grid of the chips.
ALT This illustration shows a house with a window open, positioned 25 feet away from a running generator emitting carbon monoxide. The sky is gray, indicating danger from CO. Text advises placing generators at least 25 feet from homes and away from doors and windows. "Take It Outside" is emphasized at the bottom. The image is by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).
ALT A person wearing safety glasses and a mask is working in a laboratory. They are using a pipette to transfer liquid into vials on a rack beneath a SASK safety hood. Lab equipment and safety notices are visible, and shelves hold various supplies.
ALT A man wearing safety glasses and a baseball cap leans over a lab table holding computer monitors that show spreadsheets of data.
ALT This image shows a satellite view of Hurricane Maria. The hurricane displays a swirling pattern with a distinct eye over Puerto Rico. The colors indicate intensity, with red and yellow representing stronger parts of the storm. Surrounding areas include parts of the Caribbean Sea. The image includes labels for the hurricane's name, date, and time, with logos of NOAA and CIMSS visible.
ALT A red circuit board with gold components and connectors. The board features the NIST logo and has multiple metal connectors on each side.
ALT A researcher wearing a lab coat uses tongs to place a silvery sphere into a large scientific device as another researcher looks on.
ALT A timeline depicting significant scientific events. At the start, Einstein's Theory of General Relativity in 1915 with a photo of Einstein. Next, the first human on the Moon in 1969 with an image of an astronaut. Lastly, NIST’s Peanut Butter Standard Reference Material in 2003 with a jar image. The timeline ends at 2026.
