Radiant has secured U.S. Department of Energy (@ENERGY) approval of its Documented Safety Analysis for Kaleidos, making it the only microreactor to be reviewed and approved by the DOE for full power operations.
The approval is not just for criticality, but for Radiant’s full power, full temperature testing at the Idaho National Laboratory. Radiant will test the complete reactor system using the same design it will manufacture at scale.

Sweet. It's a 1 megawatt nuclear microreactor that fits in a shipping container.
Gas-cooled, first by helium, then air.
Runs for five years, then you ship it back to the factory, where they take care of the spent fuel and refuel it.
Happy Halloween 🎃
The biggest boogeyman in the US is the Grid. 👻
The grid has three jobs: generation, transmission, and utilization and transmission is failing by far. The fix is to skip it entirely: generate power right where it’s used, with a source dense enough to run for years.
Kaleidos combines generation and transmission. You just get power in a box, on site. No waiting in the dark. Happy Halloween. 🎃

I want domestic nuclear so bad.
You can put it in my back yard, @RadiantNuclear!

A microreactor just got DOE approval to run at full power... and it's the same design they plan to build in a factory. 25 years in software taught me unit #1 is always expensive. The number I'm watching is the cost of unit #50. That's when nuclear becomes a product, not a project.

The promise of cheap, clean, abundant energy to power civilization is moving from ambition to commercial production.
Over the summer, a number of new reactor designs reached criticality, sparking our imaginations about the renewed potential of nuclear.
Now, @RadiantNuclear's Kaleidos has become the first microreactor design to receive DOE safety analysis approval for full-power operations.
After a final readiness review, Radiant can begin testing the complete reactor system, progressing from first criticality to sustained operation at full power. A major step toward putting this technology to work in the real world.
Congratulations to @DougBernauer, @torishiv, the entire Radiant team, and @ENERGY for bringing that future closer.

This is important!
The next milestone after the criticality tests of mid-2026 is for a microreactor to achieve full thermal power, which Radiant hopes to do soon.
Then, in 2027, we hope to see a microreactor company build a full-scale prototype able to generate electricity.
