Possumhaw Holly (Ilex decidua) We have driven and walked by these three trees hundreds of times in the past eight years. Today, Tuesday October 20, 2026, is the first time I noticed it was different than the others on this property because of the red berries on it. The little bit of research I have done on these trees they appear to be Possumhaw Holly (Ilex decidua). The berries only appear on the female tree and are mildly toxic to humans and pets. It looks a lot like a Winterberry (Ilex verticillata). The berries and leaves are beneficial to the birds, butterflies and especially beneficial to honeybees. It is a larval host for the Henry Elfin Butterfly. Located near Fort Hood, Texas. wildflower.org/plants/result… backyardecology.net/possumha…

Black-tailed Jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) We just call them Jackrabbits. There are a lot of them around here and outnumber the Cottontails about 5 to 1. Twenty to Forty Jackrabbits can eat the equivalent of what one cow eats in a day. Located near Fort Hood, Texas. tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/wild… nps.gov/bibe/learn/nature/ja…

This is one of my favorite oak trees on the property. It is a Texas live oak (Quercus fusiformis). Live oaks are slow growing but provide good shade when mature. The acorns can be processed to be milled into flour for human consumption. The deer, turkey, quail and squirrels along with other wildlife rely on the acorns as a food source. Located near Fort Hood, Texas. wildflower.org/plants/result…

Another prolific plant on the property that is nice to look at is what I believe to be Prairie Broomweed (Amphiachyris dracunculoides). It is good for the pollinators (Bees and butterflies) but not so good for humans, pets, livestock or wildlife. From what little I know about the plant is it can be useful as a cover crop to reduce soil erosion and to build up organic matter in the soil for future plantings. wildflower.org/plants/result…

Datura wrightii “Sacred Datura” I have known this plant as Angels Trumpet or Jimson Weed. While the flowers are beautiful the entire plant is toxic, even fatal, to humans and animals. None of our cows or mini donkeys mess with it so we usually leave them alone. I don’t think any of the wildlife eat it either. The flowers bloom at night and are usually gone before mid morning. Located near Fort Hood, Texas. I have included two informational links about the plant if you want to research it further: wildflower.org/plants/result… wildflowersofjoshuatreecount…

Living in a rural area requires continual monitoring. While checking the fences tonight I realized that a lot of people may have never seen or heard of things that I see and hear on a regular basis. This is a Texas Kidneywood shrub (Eysenhardtia texana). It is beneficial for the bees, butterflies and bats. USDA link: plants.sc.egov.usda.gov/Docu…
