I have four papers accepted at #ACL2026 🥳 LLMs can give the right answer for the wrong reason. My first-author paper w/ @Bollegala, @eltimster shows that checking how a model thinks, not just its final answer, reveals hidden social biases across 8 languages & 13 bias categories.

I'm at ACL presenting these papers! Also excited to chat about developing LLMs that promote *human* agency and well-being, by measuring and accounting for user impacts and implicit assumptions made in human-AI interaction :-) or anything else :P #ACL2026 #ACL2026NLP

New paper at #ACL2026 Findings! 🧵 (1/8) How do you pick the best in-context examples for an LLM? Most methods focus on similarity or diversity — but they miss a more fundamental question: how much of the task's latent structure does your demo set actually *cover*?

Looking forward to #ACL2026, I'll be around July 3-8. Feel free to ping if you want to catch up! I won't make it to #ICML2026, but many of my co-authors will be there and at ACL to share our work on: -- calibrated correctness models/introspection -- skill-based model routing -- annotation-free routing -- long-horizon info-seeking PRMs -- attributed steering for VLMs, multimodal citations/attribution 🧵

Very honored to share that our work receives 🏅SAC Highlight at #ACL2026 ! This work came together as an outcome of resilience, passion, and dedication. Very grateful for my collaborators , reviewers, and ACs in the process! Meanwhile I have felt so inspired by all the amazing work at #ACL2026 and it’s all the dedication together that made science grow with passion! Looking forward to the next!
Human evaluation is often treated as the gold standard for long-form generation, but how much can we trust it if papers don’t report how it was done? We study this question in our large-scale survey “Illusions of the Gold Standard” to be presented at @aclmeeting! 🧵1/n

🎉 Happy to share that our paper on function words & language learning (w/ Heidi Getz & @weGotlieb) is accepted to #ACL2026! A little late to the party, but still worth celebrating 🥳 We ask: what statistical properties help a learner abstract grammatical knowledge from linear input? Turns out function words, though often overlooked, play an important role. Check out our updated preprint: arxiv.org/pdf/2601.21191 🧵 1/4

📌 𝐌𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐓𝐞𝐱𝐭! Introducing our #ACL2026 Main Track paper! "𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐗: 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫-𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭-𝐨𝐟-𝐍 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧-𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧" (w/ Professor @SharonYixuanLi) 📄 Paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2601.02535 🖥️ Code: github.com/deeplearning-wisc… 🎯 Blog Post: sites.google.com/view/froila… ⚠️ Best-of-N selection is one of the most effective ways to improve LLM outputs. But there is a catch: It works naturally when answers are easy to verify. It gets much harder for open-ended generation. Why?

New paper at #ACL2026 (main): Valid Survey Simulations with Limited Human Data Can LLMs replace human respondents? Not really; naive use can mislead. But can they still help? Yes! 📷 arxiv.org/abs/2510.11408 w/ @russogiusep @serinachang5 @cervisiarius @krisgligoric (1/4)

Landed in San Diego for #ACL2026 yesterday, with a pretty nice room view! 🏖️🌊 I will be at these 2 locations for keynotes today if you want to chat 👇 -- “Unifying Video and Audio for Multimodal Understanding and Generation” 23rd International Conference on Spoken Language Translation (@iwslt) 9.40-10.30am (iwslt.org/2026/) -- “Long-Horizon Video Reasoning and Generation” 4th ACL Workshop on Advances in Language and Vision Research (#ALVR2026) 2.10-2.50pm (alvr-workshop.github.io/)
👋 Looking forward to attending #ACL2026 (in-person in San Diego) and #ICML2026 (probably virtually) for these presentations/workshop keynotes & meeting everyone (also, I'll be in the Bay Area beforehand, for a keynote at the Apple Reasoning and Planning Workshop)! Feel free to ping if you want to meet up in Bay/SD (I also have July1 partly free in SJ/SF, and several days in SD), and discuss research, life, etc. (we're also hiring at all levels: phd, postdoc, faculty)! 🙂 PS. also meet several of our awesome students/postdocs/alumni attending these 2 conferences to present these works. 👇👇

Our paper has been accepted to #ACL2026 🎉 It shows how inductive biases suggested by innate hypotheses in human language acquisition (i.e., the Language Acquisition Device) can improve the learning efficiency of LMs.
