Recent survey numbers point to a key problem: Narendra #Modi may be losing some support, but #RahulGandhi is not necessarily gaining from it. For the Congress to seriously challenge the #BJP nationally, it needs to narrow the vote-share gap by persuading at least some BJP voters to switch sides. There are other problems too: inconsistency in political messaging, moving away from the economy-focused campaigns that worked well in 2017-18, and Rahul Gandhi’s reluctance to intervene more directly in crucial state-level battles. From Gujarat and Rajasthan to Haryana, Maharashtra and Punjab, the question is whether Rahul Gandhi is making full use of his political capital. @AdityaMenon22 Watch: thequint.com/news/politics/r… #RahulGandhi #NarendraModi #Congress #BJP #IndianPolitics #Elections

In Delhi, India’s power capital, the dispensation is responding to citizens’ anger by relocating their protest ritual—a theatre of democratic legitimacy—from Jantar Mantar to Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground, and East Delhi’s CBD Ground. It is creating distance between citizens and authority while presenting that distance as accommodation. Designating new sites aims to weaken the revolt while slyly preserving its outward form, giving citizens a venue for their questions, and power breathing room to leave them unanswered. Navina Jafa writes. Read the full article: thequint.com/opinion/from-ja…

The events, and the continued obstruction that followed even after the SC's order, raise a haunting question: are we witnessing the slow unravelling of constitutional governance, a spectre of the Emergency-era ADM Jabalpur case reborn? @legallyuddin Read: thequint.com/opinion/silence…

Delhi Police detained Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with other protesters, on Tuesday, 13 October, after they managed to enter Jantar Mantar despite police barricades and restrictions on demonstrations at the site. The detentions came just a day after authorities de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, effectively ending its status as one of Delhi's principal locations for public demonstrations. The protesters, carrying the national flag, entered the barricaded premises before being taken into custody by police personnel. The latest detentions come amid an ongoing crackdown on demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Over the past several days, protesters, student activists and opposition leaders have faced repeated detentions as Delhi Police imposed restrictions on gatherings across central Delhi. Despite the restrictions, CJP members have continued their demonstrations against the Election Commission, raising questions about the shrinking space for public protest in the national capital.

A day after Delhi Police de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, along with Ajinkya Shinde and other volunteers, managed to enter the barricaded protest site early on Tuesday, 13 October, carrying the national flag. Videos shared by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke showed protesters climbing an iron gate and police barricades to reach Jantar Mantar. The protesters were subsequently detained by Delhi Police. “JANTAR MANTAR HAS BEEN RECLAIMED!” Saurav Das declared in a social media post, announcing that they had entered the protest site and were being detained. The development comes a day after Delhi Police announced that Jantar Mantar would no longer be a designated protest venue, following recommendations by a committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi have been designated as alternative protest sites. The decision follows days of protests and police crackdowns across central Delhi, where CJP members, student organisations and opposition parties have been demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process. Reacting to Tuesday's detentions, Dipke declared, “You cannot denotify the resistance.”

Mumbai's Shivaji Park witnessed another massive show of resistance on Monday, 12 October, as hundreds of protesters gathered to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of electoral roll irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Around 1,000 supporters of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) gathered at the iconic ground in Dadar, turning what was initially planned as a silent demonstration into a protest marked by slogans of “azadi” and demands for the CEC's resignation. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, accompanied by his brother Tejas Thackeray, led a demonstration with party workers wearing black ribbons across their mouths. MNS chief Raj Thackeray also participated in a signature campaign demanding Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. The gathering came a day after Mumbai Police detained around 300 protesters near Shivaji Park on Sunday, prompting Aaditya Thackeray and MNS leader Amit Thackeray to stage a sit-in demanding their release. On Monday, Mumbai Police also registered an FIR against the Thackeray cousins and several others in connection with Sunday's protest. Despite the police deployment and barricading around Shivaji Park, protesters continued their demonstration, with opposition leaders vowing to sustain the agitation until the Chief Election Commissioner steps down. The protests in Mumbai are part of a wider agitation against the Election Commission, with demonstrations also taking place in Delhi and other parts of the country.
