You either get it or you don't
If you think this math is terrible, you will never get it
If you think you can make this math work, you will do just fine
This business is 50% maths and 50% "words"
If you are good in both, you will excel
If you are good in either, you will do fine.
The chinese investors still use google translate, but they can math
When it comes to words, you need to understand these:

We often see this message on domain x and think wow, 1800 to 25K in 6 months
What you don't see is the other 200 names that went for 1800 and didn't get sold
Here is the Math.
200 x 1800 = 360K
You invested 360K in the last 6 months
And you got a sale of 25K
OK but you are exceptional and can get 2% STR even at 25K ASP
Great.. You did 50K on a 360K investment

I took the 1000 bucks pack and I only dislike about 5/6 names. If I were not looking to scale down, I would have taken all the available boxes

Sure, why not? Including my latest sale, the average yearly return on my portfolio of three-letter .com domains is 5.63% (XIRR). The calculation uses the actual purchase and sale dates, and unsold domains are valued at their original purchase cost.
I currently have 105 domains in my portfolio:
Good letters (only premium letters) - 22 domains.
Average letters (contain 1 or more of F/G/H/K and no bad letters) - 63 domains.
Bad letters (contain exactly one of J/Q/U/V/W/X/Y/Z) - 20 domains.
Nice letters

How to build a huge portfolio today
Straight from the Horse's mouth
I asked @mikemanndotcom this question 4 years ago.
If I thought it was too much work and too much investment, I would still be crying about Afternic landers not working today
I have been buying names from Auctions every single day, one at a time. Sometime I buy a name for say 2K, and I will quickly bulk scan if similar names are listed for less and I will snap them up if the price makes sense.
SOmetime i get inspired a 2 word combination and quickly scan what kind of price they sold for, or are currently listed for and there are similar names available to hand reg. Many times specially bulk of the names that are sold for 400-500 a pop, you will find very close adjacents for hand reg. But those are far and few in between
Here is how I buy
I buy as much as my cash flow allows and I optimize for maximum cashflow
I buy the best opportunity that are up in auction in timeframe. You need to quickly decide if paying 1000 for A is better than paying 700 for B
I don't buy names for specificity. I don't care if a kew word has raised funds. I look at the big picture and see fund rasing pattern in the industry and buy more names
instead of betting on one Horse by fighting with other degens
If BlueHorse raised funds, I will not fight to win blueHorse
Rather I would see the funding pattern of horse and buy green horse and brown horse for the price I would pay for Blue Horse
I would still bid on Blue widget though, for the culture.
It is a long road but this is the way
One at a time
