it's always kind of wild to me that big US states are at most 60/40 in statewide elections, usually less. We think of some of them as very red and some of them are very blue, but if they had proportional representation for senate they'd probably each get 1 red and 1 blue senator.

I don't want to overstate this, in some sense going from 60/40 one way to 40/60 the other way is a huge difference. But I also don't think the reality corresponds to the framing we usually get.

maybe the weird thing about airbnb is that it got taken over by professional sellers who wanted the rules and norms of an amateur marketplace

The problem with the old airbnb cleaning rules was just that they didn't have to be disclosed before you booked. There was a 100 part table pre-booking that told you whether the place had a fax machine but not whether you'd be forced to wake up at 5am to wash your own sheets

The new rules seem to be more pro-tenant and less pro-host, the hosts are saying they'll charge more for cleaning fees, but why is Airbnb not just forcing hosts to disclose their rules up front and then let everyone decide the fair price for cleaning?

would you still love me if I asked you endless hypothetical questions where every possible answer is wrong? 🥹

I have an entirely free day in New York this Friday. The possibilities are endless. Places to see? People to meet? I am radically open to new experiences

Craziest thing in the world to me is that alchemy is real and my pals in sf are doing it
Last month, we demonstrated high-rate alchemy: turning mercury into real, stable gold, beating CERN’s record by a factor of 10. Last week, we enriched isotopes in the world’s most powerful plasma centrifuge, beating the Soviet record that stood for 40 years. Now, we’re building a fusion reactor in San Francisco to achieve record power density.

What feels broken to y’all about video chat? I previously founded a Zoom competitor, and it didn’t work out, but I’ve started feeling pretty dissatisfied w video chat recently.

all armrests can be double decker if we just reject outdated ideas of “personal space” and embrace a new norm of arm stacking

It didn’t matter who played. Founders at Betaworks, game designers at NYU, defense officials at Chatham House, tech people in SF: all four rooms ended up dependent on America. Think you can do better? Dead Reckoning launches today. It's free. GLHF! riskgaming.com/scenarios/dea…

Airplanes should have double-decker armrests so you can all rest your arms simultaneously

Asterisk's only trade school graduate is back with blue collar lifestyle piece!
Skilled trades are frequently thought of as a route out of poverty. But trades workers tell a different story. @JesseTayRiver, a contractor who works in home remodeling, explains:
