A Russian MoD map has been leaked. Even though we know its inaccurate, understanding the way its wrong can allow you to still use the information to understand the wider conflict more clearly.
It can feel like bases in Mali are captured by insurgents fairly regularly, but very little progress is made overall.
Here's why that is👇

I have just come back Myanmar 🇲🇲 where I spent two weeks traveling around the resistance-held territories of the Sagaing region. Its a remote region which no other foreign press has managed to visit since the start of the war five years ago.
I'll share some impressions below 🧵
An updated article on the current situation in Mali since the initial attacks over the weekend.

🇲🇱 A map of the current situation in Mali as attacks by the JNIM and FLA coalition continue.
The coalition has taken control of Kidal, Tessalit, Tessit, Ber, and the mines at In-Tahaka.
Not wanting to miss out, ISSP seized Labbezanga, but their attempt to take Ménaka failed.
JNIM has now also initiated a blockade of Bamako, which could slow the government from bringing adequate reinforcements to the already precarious garrisons in the east.
With the coalition taking the military outpost in Ber, Tombouctou is now at greater risk.
As before, the operational areas of insurgent groups are shown rather than 'control', due to the fluid nature of the conflict.
