June is Migraine Awareness Month. Migraine is a brain disease that deserves far more attention than it gets.
Migraine affects over 1 billion people worldwide. It is three times more common in women, and has been identified as the second leading cause of years lived with disability globally. Yet it remains chronically underdiagnosed and undertreated.
At @wchf, Dr. Christine Lay, Professor of Neurology and Founding Director of the Headache Program at @UofT, and neurologist at the Centre for Headache at @WCHospital, is working to change that. Her work is advancing our understanding of how migraine impacts women across the lifespan, including its connection to hormonal health, pregnancy, and perinatal outcomes.
Recent research that Dr. Lay contributed to, published in the @AmJEpi with lead author Melina Albanese, PhD, examined over 2.6 million pregnancies in Ontario and found that women with pre-pregnancy migraine and co-morbidities may face elevated risks of severe maternal and neonatal complications, a finding that underscores how much is still at stake when migraine goes unrecognized and untreated in women.
This is the kind of research that changes care. Click the link below to learn more about the work of Dr. Lay and the Centre for Headache at @WCHospital.
