WhytManga Odunze

Today, my Artober entry is a study of one of the pages of @Saturday_am ’s Apple Black, vol 1. Here Mikael (Sano’s new teacher) hears out Sano’s (the main character) most difficult feelings and most pressing motivations. Despite all that has happened to him and yet being given a devastating power to do something about it, he chooses forgiveness instead of revenge. That choice shocked me reading this manga the first time. So, Sano breaks away from the mold of anime shonen main characters? Interesting! I do wonder with such a destructive gift how he will be able to bring forgiveness instead of a painful end to those that bring conflict. Sano’s suffers from a reoccurring nightmare of seeing the last moments of his late father. He has no other dreams, just that one. And on another note, he has no other dreams or life goals. His gift powered arm has already laid out his whole life to be a savior that has been prophesied to change things. No dreams in lying or in waking life of his own. I can relate both ways. I don’t dream either. I just sleep and wake up. If I ever do dream, they are always nightmares and bad dreams. I’ve only had four good dreams…ever. I had reoccurring nightmares for a long time growing up. It’s hard shaking off bad night, after bad night of sleep. Or not being able to relate to others that have common dreams like being late for school but they graduated years ago or getting that dream about flying. I also was afraid to have dreams my own dreams. I always felt like it was never the right time for them anyway. I always had someone else to take care of or some other obligation had to be that had priority over anything I wanted to do. Or that my life was already mapped out due to stuff in the past. I could only go so far in one direction before having to get pulled back to servitude or remembering the angst of the past. So, I learned to daydream. I learned to keep journaling, even if the journaling was done in my head. I have drawn more than I ever had, even as a kid. I have plans to do more than usual with my art. The biggest joy I’ve had being an artist is being inspired by other creatives. They have such amazing ideas that look beautiful through their own art, songs, words, and the like. And you have to be brave to dream or protect your good dreams. I want to talk more about how to get over the cycle of bad dreams at another time. I just had to draw part of this page because I thought it was saying really something multi-layered. And I love that you can still do that in your own way. Redrawing this page on paper was so fun to do. I plan for some real fan art for apple Black and Saturday Am other series soon. Whyt manga-sensei has an interesting art style! #redraw #appleblack #traditionalart
