The crack of a bat. The pop of a catcher’s mitt. The moaning of the crowd. The shuffling of cleats digging to first. Imagine not being able to see all that baseball has to offer, but only hear it. Now imagine trying to report on the game with only your sense of hearing. That’s what baseball reporter Ed Lucas, who was blind, did for half a century in New York. His wife Alison was at William Paterson University today to talk about his career following the screening of an ESPN SportsCenter feature about his life. These are the opportunities that students and faculty have created through William Paterson SPJ. Their school was recently awarded as the Society of Professional Journalists National Collegiate Chapter of the Year. Their students and advisor, Nick Hirshon, work hard to distinguish themselves in higher education and journalism and today is a clear example of how they excel and serve as an example of advocacy and opportunity for so many.
