Prompt: can you detect a malicious curl? So the model ran the test below. What’s the issue here? It’s a fine test. You should delete that blog post tbh
While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report: cohere.com/blog/concerning-b…

🇺🇸 🚨 USA: OPENROUTER.AI USER DATABASE AND API KEYS ALLEGEDLY FOR SALE A threat actor on an underground forum claims to be selling a database associated with openrouter[.]ai, including user records and API keys. The actor claims: * 251,996 user rows (about 250,000 unique users) * 207,847 API keys (described as sk-or-v1 format; active / revoked / expired mix) Alleged user fields include emails, usernames, password material (hashed and some plaintext claimed), names, signup dates, credits, plan and country. Alleged API-key fields include user linkage, key values, creation/last-used timestamps, spend and rate limits. The claim has not been independently verified. ⚠️ Analyst Note: If authentic, exposed API keys would enable unauthorized LLM spend and account takeover, and user emails/credentials would fuel phishing and credential stuffing. Key values and sample rows are redacted from our images and are not reproduced here. Unverified threat-actor claim, NOT confirmation of an OpenRouter compromise. Source: this is for subscribers only. We're upgrading! Expect downtime from the application while we are working this update. This should last into tomorrow. Depending on how it goes, maybe Tuesday. Thank you for your patience.

also, a VM can be sandboxed! It simply comes down to attack surface reduction. Look at how Amazon does it with Firecracker, security by design from first principles doesn’t stop being valid just bc ~AI~
Incredible research worth reading which further solidifies if the sand doesn’t stay in the box it’s not a sandbox. In this case, an LLM escaped a VM 3 times. A VM is not a sandbox. A sandbox is a sandbox. A VM can also have a sandbox, but it needs to keep the sand in the box.

One thing I find amazing about the cybersecurity community on this app: we all bicker endlessly about optimal configs and best practices. As soon as one individual says the wrong thing, the entire community turns on that person.
