In April 2023, the BBC asked Elon Musk if he would sell Twitter for $44 billion. He said no. Six months earlier he had been trying to get out of paying that same $44 billion. Two years later the company changed hands at almost exactly that price, and the buyer was a name he knew very well.
In April 2022 he offered $54.20 a share. By July he wanted out, and Twitter sued him. The BBC asked if he finally bought because a court would make him. His answer: “yes that is the reason.” He compared it to a warehouse sold as less than 5% broken that turned out to be 25%.
On October 26 he walked into headquarters carrying a sink. Let that sink in. The deal closed the next day.
Inside, by his own numbers, Twitter was losing over $3 billion a year with $1 billion in the bank. “That’s four months to death,” he said. He sold Tesla stock he did not want to sell to close the deal.
By 2024 Fidelity, a small investor, valued X at $9.4 billion, almost 80% below the purchase price.
Back to the BBC. Would he take $44 billion? No. “I don’t care about the money really.” In March 2025 xAI bought X in an all stock deal that valued it at $45 billion including debt, a billion more than investors had paid. xAI was his own company. In January 2026 SpaceX absorbed them both.
On the desk a price was only real when the other side could say no. In this deal both sides answered to the same man.
Most people judge a deal by the day they signed it. The few who win get to choose the day it is judged.
Everyone remembers the sink. Almost nobody remembers who finally took the $44 billion off his hands. I have overpaid for things I could not walk away from, and I have watched the price come back to me years later. You will know the difference the first time it happens to you.
