lots of reasons to be excited today but having my idols first ever x post be about trade(xyz) tops it all
I am excited to be an investor in trade(xyz) as they partner with ICE to bring 24/7 perpetual futures on Hyperliquid to the United States. As a market participant, I am looking forward to to using their innovative product to enhance my investment process.

gossip (read) priority fees on hyperliquid are broken currently the team that is benefitting the most is wintermute (insert fist shaking red emoji guy meme) this is not publicly known but can be determined with certainty by mapping out transfers to labeled wallets from the top winner of the gossip priority fee auctions (they have won 79% of the slot 0 auctions in the past 24h) tldr; wahhh wahhhh wahhh hl gossip priority, not fair. add more slots or scrap the gossip auction my proposed solution: 1) increase gossip priority to 20 equal-priority slots 2) make it so winning an auction slot grants IP whitelisting to a foundation-run peering slot i think this basically solves it and would likely *increase* total gossip priority fees --- some context the purported intention, as stated in the docs, is to "reduce the need for market makers to hyper-optimize their infrastructure to remain competitive" if you win the gossip auction slot, you get order book / node data 50ms (!!) faster than anyone else. yes. one IP, across the *entire network*, gets the feeds 50ms faster. it's the whole ballgame so in theory you could just buy the faster data slot instead of spending 10s of thousands monthly on high octane ec2 instances and [insert hft magic] or you can do BOTH, which is what wintermute is doing so despite the stated intentions it does the exact opposite and gives 1 wallet a dominant advantage over every other participant further reducing the democratization of this mechanism is the fact that, practically speaking, you can only use a won gossip slot if you have a direct peering relationship with the foundation node. multiple providers we work with couldn’t pass gossip priority benefits through to us without slowing their other peers (all independently confirmed this behavior - strange design) and to get a foundation peering you to do 0.5% of the 14d HL maker volume (we don't quite meet this threshold so our application was rejected) as well as stake 10,000 HYPE ($780,000 here), or be like, a node service provider --- without revealing too much i can say with 100% certainty that wintermute has maxed out BOTH the infrastructure optimization + expenditure AND is monopolizing the gossip fee auction they're spending on average $26,000 *per day* ($10M/yr) to win this auction so rn they're just eating everyone else's lunch and the only way that approach is economic is if you are MM at the scale that they are, which only a handful of wallets are doing

the systemic risk here of course, which admittedly is why i'm speaking up, is that this squeezes out all the smaller MMs who aren't winning the single 50ms slot the place this would first start showing up is order book depth in the alts, since fills on those are harder to hedge than fills on blue chips, so MMs get squeezed out of them faster bc wintermute can take most of the juice i can't draw causality directly, and write priority bidding affects this too (because stale quotes can be picked off more) but i can factually say - by looking at order book depth across alts (ranks 21-50 by volume) on hyperliquid since july (loris tools full ob depth started then), that HL liquidity on alts has lost significant ground relative to Binance in that time (see 2nd chart in image) indexed to its relative depth vs Binance in August, depth on HL alts has *decreased by 33%* yes i have a vested interest here since we are small/mid-sized MM, but lower liquidity is bad, especially when it generates less than $20M of annualized revenue --- at the end of the day, we need a better solution than the current version more slots and better access are my proposed fixes. it's a win / win

fun fact, i know billy evans (elizabeth holmes' husband) quite well we were friends in college. he even filled in for a last minute cancellation and went on my bachelor party ski trip we don't chat much these days, have hung out at a few mutual friends' weddings in the past couple of years yes he has always had the shock-factor / self-involved / attention seeking personality, even in college. he'd acknowledge this but he also had a genuinely kind and good natured side that we don't hear much about. trite to say, and i understand why you might not hear me, but he is a good person. he just is the trial changed him. the cruel, brutal, harsh reality of his life predicament changed him. his edges are sharper and he come across as unhinged but imo it's all a defense mechanism developed to protect himself and especially his family the human mind, when cornered, behaves in unpredictable ways the world is curb-stomping him over and over and over and over again, and he has two vulnerable little kids at home and a wife in prison. if you were in his shoes, i promise you you'd behave in ways people would judge you for. i would. i haven't said anything until now but the effect the whole ordeal has had on him gives me sadness. he didn't / doesn't deserve it, despite what you hear i see many ppl taking sick pleasure in watching the trainwreck, schadenfreuding while his wife's choices and prison time cleaves a gash in the family overanalyzing every possible detail that gets revealed with each new story if you've ever been in a deeply difficult personal situation, or had a loved one who has, please just take a beat to empathize with their situation on some level will probably delete this but just had to cathartically put this out in the world

funny how every serious quant trader type on the tl quickly identified / agreed upon serious fatal "unresolved vectors" (sheesh) and set a p(protocol death) = 1 for papertrade several variations on the thinking but it boils down to the fact that you can't have a pool of LP money being the counterparty providing 0 slippage trading at large size the pool will get arbed to zero eventually. the current footgun likely means usage dwindles rapidly but even if PAPER was transferrable i feel strongly it was doomed from the outset and oh, btw even the non-transferability of PAPER does NOT guarantee someone doesn't make a synthetic perp or prediction market that would benefit an attacker enough to establish the mechanic papertrade is currently trying to avoid anyway --- a reasonable assumption in any serious trading (and especially shark-infested quant trading) is if you give someone an edge, they will exploit to the maximum extent possible until all of the money has been transferred from your wallet into theirs it might not happen today, or tomorrow, but it will happen oi caps were never a realistic solution, although that's what jez DMd me they were implementing (right after he unfollowed me for posting about the protocol design flaw) whack-a-mole efforts and wallet blacklisting also not a solution and neither of those is sybil resistant there is no solution other than a fundamental redesign of the protocol. but if you can't provide massive size at 0 slippage, you don't get the cartoonishly large metrics, and the hairbrained experiment is less enticing to avg retail participant --- and yet here we are with shocked pikachu faces and $2,000 trousers sucks that people are getting hurt again. and it shouldn't be on them to understand edge case mechanics that put their funds at risk --- ps this is the 2nd time i've pointed out an arb embedded in a mechanism designed by jez, the 1st being the multi-million dollar Lighter funding rate rebate where funding losses got refunded the arb was to open long+short legs on the same asset on separate accounts and collect risk-free funding loss refunds on the losing leg, delta neutral. know 1 party who made 6 figures on this!
if true this is a serious error in protocol design the root problem: someone with a large Papertrade position can benefit disproportionately by moving the underlying reference market, BTC or ETH on Hyperliquid core please forgive crudeness / errors but this this is how it works: papertrade allows you to execute up to $10M at hyperliquid mid price (halfway between top bid and ask for BTC or ETH), and papertrade's LP is your counterparty directly so here's the arb, by way of example: 1) load up 10 Papertrade wallets with 100K USDC each 2) put on 10 separate 100x leveraged $10M ETH shorts on Papertrade, adding up to a total $100M short. the key here is there is NO SLIPPAGE on Papertrade since it just hardcoded executes at mid using hyperliquid prices as reference px! 3) next - separately, market sell $20M ETH on Hyperliquid core, causing the actual ETH market to drop 15bps 4) you make $100M*15bps=$150,000 profit on your Papertrade shorts 5) close the Papertrade position, and you can even long $20M on Papertrade here to be net flat vs the $20M HL short and slowly TWAP out of your HL short if you want 6) return to step 2, repeat this is obviously pretty bad if this is what's happening

This aged well. 3 hours into the supposed "Black Monday" stock market crash and Nasdaq 100 futures are now up nearly +1%. The S&P 500 is set to add +$350 billion in market cap at the open again. As we stated 24 hours ago: Ignore the noise.
