This is one of my favorite rabbit holes... Why do these massive 19th-century asylum complexes scattered across North America look more like fortified castles than hospitals? It makes me wonder about how history is curated, and how easily inconvenient truths could be buried under official narratives. When you look at the sheer scale of these stone structures built at a time when towns were barely established, it begs the question of whether they were actually meant to treat the insane, or if they served as a way to silence anyone who remembered a world that no longer existed before a major reset. Connect that concept to the history of orphan trains, where thousands of children were systematically relocated across the continent under the guise of rescue and welfare and one has to wonder what was really going on. Uprooting and/or institutionalizing entire populations of children or independent thinkers would be a very easy way to create a clean slate.
