Spooky but true: about 8% of your genome is made of leftovers from ancient viruses. Most are silent now, like fossils. But some were put to work: syncytin, a gene borrowed from an old virus, helps build the placenta. Ghosts in your genome. Happy Halloween! 👻🧬
Only about 1-2% of your genome codes for proteins. The rest isn't simply «junk»: scientists keep finding jobs for it, from gene switches to leftovers of ancient viruses. 🧬
Myth or fact: identical twins have exactly the same DNA. 👯🧬
A) Myth
B) Fact

About 65% of people digest milk sugar less well after childhood. Many others carry a tiny DNA «switch» that keeps the lactase gene on for life. Evolution, in your latte. 🥛🧬

How much of you is written in your DNA? 50 years of twin studies, 17,000+ traits: on average, about half of the differences between people were linked to genes. The other half? Food, sleep, movement, the people around you, even luck. A starting point, not the finish line. 🧬
Does a coffee after 5 pm keep you awake? ☕
A) Yes, every time
B) Never
Reply in the comments: A or B. Soon we'll explain why the answer is partly in your DNA.
Genes or environment? Almost always both. 50 years of twin studies, 17,804 traits: on average, about half of the differences between people were linked to genes. The other half is life. 🧬
Clocks went back last night in Europe. Are you a morning person or a night owl? Partly, that's your DNA. A large study linked over 350 regions of the genome to being a morning person. But light, habits and age matter a lot too. A tendency, not a label. Which one are you? ☀️🌙
Myth or fact: humans and chimpanzees share more than 95% of their DNA? 🧬
Fact. We both come from a common ancestor (we didn't descend from chimps).
The small part that's different still adds up to millions of tiny differences. 🐒

There's about two metres of DNA inside almost every cell of your body, and that cell is too small to see. How does it fit? It wraps around tiny proteins called histones, like thread on spools, then coils again and again. Tiny cell, giant instruction manual. 🧬
So what does DNA actually do? It holds the recipes, called genes, for making proteins. Proteins build your cells and keep them running: they carry oxygen, digest food, fight germs. You have about 20,000 protein recipes. DNA is the recipe book; proteins are the dishes. 🧬
What is DNA? Think of it as your body's instruction manual. It's written with just four letters: A, T, C and G. Your genome has about 3 billion pairs of them, copied in almost every cell. Those letters spell out how to build and run you. Four letters, one you. 🧬
