Baserunning is an issue because youth leagues refuse to put in rules that curb nonstop stealing. A kid gets on first and he’s at third in 2 pitches bc pitchers can’t hold & catchers arms aren’t strong enough. It’s an easy fix.
High School coaches say the biggest areas of weakness with incoming freshman are Baseball IQ and base-running, with being able to bunt properly and pitchers backing up bases on the list too.
Most of these players have been playing for years and likely have had 100’s of practices and played 100’s of games by this point. Why do we think many of these youngsters don’t have better feel for the game in these areas by now? What’s missing from the years prior? Is it “just a kid thing?” Is it a lack of coaching? Is it how the game is taught and played on the small field compared to the big field? All of the above?
Are you just trying or are you committed? There’s a big difference between the two! Game of baseball is full of failures and a mindset that just try’s accepts failures. It’s the committed that use failures as a road map to find success!
Culture isn’t a slogan. Culture is built by your everyday actions and what you allow is what you’ll become.
You know when a good team has culture! Sometimes it feels unexplainable but you know!
Time is valuable, so how are you investing it as a coach? Players will remember the coaches who invested in them, not just the ones who coached them.
As coaches, our greatest responsibility isn’t developing better players, it’s developing better people.
The wins, the stats, and the championships will eventually fade. The character, discipline, accountability, and habits our players carry into the rest of their lives won’t.
