It was great to have Rachel Pether (@RPether), Head of Middle East at 3iQ, speak on the panel “Inside UAE Manager Selection — How CIOs and Allocators Choose External Managers for Their Mandates” at the @MarketsGrp 5th Annual Private Wealth Middle East Forum in Dubai last week. We also had the pleasure of hosting a roundtable discussion on what’s next for digital asset investing. A few key takeaways from the discussion: There are two distinct ways to approach digital assets. You can invest in digital assets — sizing Bitcoin like gold and layer-1 tokens like venture capital — or invest using digital assets, through hedge fund strategies that target uncorrelated returns from inefficient markets. On portfolio construction, the case for digital assets rests less on diversification and more on convexity. Digital assets show positive skew, meaning a 3% allocation may contribute 30–40% of a portfolio’s asymmetry. The window is also narrowing. At approximately USD 2.7 trillion — roughly one-tenth the size of gold — digital assets remain under-owned. That gap closes with every quarter of institutional adoption. Thank you to the event organisers and everyone who joined our roundtable discussion.

We were delighted to co-host a private dinner with @HilbertCapital in Singapore, bringing together institutional investors for an evening offering a unique opportunity to hear directly from the Kingdom of Bhutan about its journey from producing Bitcoin to managing it as a sovereign asset — and building a broader digital asset ecosystem around Gelephu Mindfulness City (@gmcbhutan). The discussion also explored how institutional engagement with digital assets is evolving, with a focus on the key considerations around portfolio allocation, custody, and structuring. Our partnership with GMC is an important illustration of our commitment to institutional stewardship and responsible oversight. 3iQ has been entrusted to manage a dedicated mandate backed by a portion of GMC’s Bitcoin treasury, while also investing in local talent and knowledge transfer and establishing a long-term presence in Gelephu — supporting GMC’s ambition to build a next-generation financial centre grounded in innovation, sustainability, and Bhutan’s cultural values. Thank you to Adrian Khoo, Barnali Biswal, Jigdrel Singay, Matteo Dante Perruccio, and everyone who joined us for an insightful evening.

3iQ and M/HQ co-hosted a workshop “Women Leading Wealth: Navigating Digital Assets Investing with Confidence,” bringing together an engaged group of women for an open discussion around digital assets and investing. The conversation reflected how far the asset class has come. Digital assets have moved past their hype phase and are increasingly recognised as an important tool in an investor’s toolkit — supported by greater regulatory clarity, more robust infrastructure, and sophisticated counterparties. Financial institutions are embracing this shift at pace, with many blue-chip firms expanding cryptocurrency and blockchain capabilities across custody, settlement, securitisation, trading, and asset management. Institutional investors including endowments, pensions, and sovereign wealth funds are also becoming increasingly active participants. The discussion also touched on the practical side of engagement. Before investing or offering solutions to their clients, institutions must consider having dedicated resources — internal or external — to assess the complexity of the market, operational risk, counterparty risk, and cybersecurity risk. Regulatory advancements are helping here too, giving companies the tools to develop innovative products and providing confidence to investors. Thank you to the speakers Rachel Pether (@RPether) and Hermione Harrison, and everyone who joined us — we hope the session provided a useful foundation for understanding how digital assets are evolving as an investment class, and we would be delighted to continue the discussion.

When does an asset class become a marketplace? Digital assets have long been viewed through the lens of cryptocurrency. But as more traditional assets move on-chain, a broader question emerges: are digital assets evolving into a financial marketplace in their own right? In a conversation at the European Blockchain Convention, in Barcelona, Tommaso Mancuso, President CIO of 3iQ, explores the developments that could shape this transition, from on-chain company listings and real-world assets to the role of regulation, liquidity and institutional adoption. We are excited to announce that 3iQ has received In-Principal Approval from Abu Dhabi’s Financial Services Authority (FSRA). It follows the announcement of our strategic partnership with @Further, the UAE-based digital asset investment manager, which enables institutional investors access to digital assets via 3iQ’s Managed Account Platform (QMAP) a platform that attracted $100 million sovereign-linked seed capital. The successful granting of this IPA is part of 3iQ’s aim to be regulated and present in all the major digital asset hubs globally, so that its award-winning investment management offering is accessible to accredited investors around the world. This includes the first ever Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs listed on a major stock exchange.
