Bike Lanes Are White Lanes seems like a great book. I just ordered one!
It’s about the racist impacts of urban planning for bike infrastructure, and how affluent white bike bros turned something seemingly good into a weapon for gentrification and displacement.
The author is even a cyclist who supports bike infrastructure.

Like you're doing anything to counter it. You're actually contributing to it. Read the book "Bike lanes are white lanes." You are pushing the tools of segregation and racism. You're a gentrifier

Orwell's great observation in "Nineteen Eighty-Four" was that to shrink a person's vocabulary is to shrink his capacity to think.
An impoverished version of English removes the mental tools needed to formulate and communicate complex (and dissenting) ideas. Such is the deep, complex relationship between language and thought.
We don't read "difficult books" to say that we've read difficult books. We read them because they expand the boundaries of what we are capable of thinking and feeling — we ascend to their level. Vocabulary helps us to recognize truths otherwise beyond our grasp.
This revelation is worse than you may think. This must be reversed.
I am speechless. Thomas Aquinas College just dropped a study on the rigor of the new SAT.
It compares the 1980/87 test with 2026. The findings should terrify every parent and teacher...
Vocabulary has collapsed.
Old SAT: 70.6% of questions tested vocab.
New SAT: 15%.
The old test forced students to know a wide range of words through analogies, antonyms, and sentence completions. The new test abandoned that. Most vocab questions now just ask students to fill in one blank from context.
Reading passages also got radically shorter (average ~97 words vs 300–340).
The new test uses short expository passages and hands you the necessary background knowledge inside the text. The older tests leaned much more heavily on argumentative and persuasive writing, assumed far more historical, scientific, and cultural knowledge, and penalized students who lacked it.
This is a redefinition of what "college readiness" means.
If you believe that kids should develop rigorous vocabulary, be capable of sustained reading, and possess background knowledge, I have bad news for you. The SAT no longer measures these.
If you want a future where children can actually read difficult texts and construct complex arguments, the SAT must be replaced now.
This cannot go on.
The pattern is unmistakable.
Every time the government tries to spend to make something more affordable, it just raises the cost.
Look at this chart every time a socialist promises they will spend their way out of our affordability crisis.

My three takeaways: shut the fuck up
Met Scott Wiener at an event hosted by @BayAreaNewLibs. My three takeaways were:
* Scott is insanely smart
* Scott is super progressive
* Scott is very tall
Anyone in SF calling Scott a "moderate" has either never experienced politics outside SF or their brain is melted.

California: The politicians are squeezing us from all sides.
Want to live in the suburbs? Too bad, we're going to tax your commute, raise your property taxes, and use state power to build towers and bring the ghetto to your block.
Want to live in the city? Now you're really in for it! We'll allow drug-tourist camps to occupy your block, release violent people onto your street, provide sanctuary for international drug cartels, close your roads, make public transit unsafe, and tax the crap out of everything you do!
If you're feeling squeezed in California, the only way out is to stop voting for the same party. One-party states always end up like this!
I'm a registered Democrat, but will be voting for Steve Hilton!
Let me get this straight: Many of us moved to Santa Clarita Valley, Antelope Valley and North San Fernando Valley because housing was more affordable, the neighborhoods were safer for raising a family and the public schools were better. Commuting to LA isn’t enjoyable but we do it because we chose our families first. Now, our politicians want to tax our commute?
Highest gas taxes; highest sales taxes; among the highest income taxes; among the highest for utilities; among the highest DMV fees. And now, politicians are going to impose a tax on us, the ones who couldn’t afford getting a house closer to LA City, for driving to work?
