Democracy depends on memory.
Individual events are reported, debated, and forgotten.
But democracy is weakened not only by what happens, but also by what citizens forget.
So I'm building a public Record of Democratic Memory — a growing archive of public events, recurring patterns, and questions that deserve to remain part of our democratic memory.
The aim is not to tell people what to think.
It is to preserve context, connect patterns, and help citizens remember.

Maharashtra Shiv Sena split (2022)
The Shiv Sena split exposed the difficulty of separating legislative defections from control of a political party’s identity and symbol.
It raises concerns about whether anti-defection rules and party-recognition procedures adequately protect the voters’ mandate when rival factions claim legitimacy.

Puducherry government collapse after ruling coalition resignations (2021)
The Puducherry crisis showed how successive resignations can bring down a coalition government just months before voters are due to return to the polls, disrupting the elected government’s mandate before its term runs its course.

Madhya Pradesh government collapse after Congress defections (2020)
The MP crisis highlighted the importance of constitutional safeguards when a government’s majority is challenged following mass resignations. The Governor’s power to call for a floor test must be exercised on objective grounds, while the Speaker’s authority to assess resignations must remain distinct from that process.

Karnataka government collapse after resignations and defections (2019)
The Karnataka crisis showed how mass resignations and defections can bring down an elected coalition government and enable a rival party to take power without a fresh general election.
The Supreme Court’s ruling also underscored that legislators cannot automatically evade anti-defection proceedings by resigning after alleged acts of defection.

WhatsApp University forwards and IT Cell propaganda are outdated.
Step out of your bubble and see the truth for yourself — straight from the people.

The Goa Congress defections in 2019 showed how the merger exception under the anti-defection law can enable a large group of legislators to switch parties without facing disqualification, substantially weakening the opposition.
The absence of a definitive Supreme Court ruling on the legal interpretation also leaves important questions about the scope of this exception unresolved.
