"It was funny, I was calling you from that phone booth over there and he was telling me you'd left, and I was staring at your car - isn't that funny."
Play Misty for Me (1971)

A modest budget, a major return: JACKSON COUNTY JAIL reportedly cost about $500,000 and had grossed roughly $3 million by May 1977. CBS also acquired its TV rights for $900,000.
For Roger Corman's New World Pictures, it was a striking commercial success.

In 1978, OUTSIDE CHANCE reworked JACKSON COUNTY JAIL (1976) for CBS. Mimieux returned, but Tommy Lee Jones was cut; original footage mixed with new scenes changed the story.

SERPICO (1973) - directed by Sidney Lumet.
How are Al Pacino and Cornelia Sharpe both in focus when everything around them is going all blurry?
What could create this kind of visual effect?
There should be an alert for shots like this.

Critic Kevin Thomas argued in the Los Angeles Times that JACKSON COUNTY JAIL revealed more about the American psyche than many expensive “serious” films.
The surprise is how much compassion and social anger Michael Miller packed into a drive-in thriller.

Watch Hollywood Boulevard closely: the Pantages marquee advertises DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT and THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.
That double bill helps date the street footage to late 1973. The film is also a visual archive of a changing city.

A joyful night chatting with Mel Brooks about his most underrated film: “The Twelve Chairs.” Such a beautiful and heartfelt movie - Mel thinks it might be his best work as a director. And the Q&A was a blast - Mel is still the funniest man on Earth… working the crowd at age 100! Scott even got to do his Dom DeLuise imitation!
