Oklahoma have fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and the man they're now handing the play calling to is Jason Witten. Witten was a high school head coach 10 months ago and has never called a play in a college game in his life. Pete Thamel of ESPN had it, and the word he used was 'interim' which means Witten gets the rest of this season with an offense that is next to last in the SEC in both yards per game and touchdowns. The Sooners are 4 and 4 with four games to play. They lost at home to South Carolina 42 to 25 and Arbuckle stood up after that one and took it on himself. "Didn't look like we were ready to play." "And I own that 100%." Now the bit that makes this one worth telling as Witten didn't come into coaching the conventional way most ex players do. He was born in Washington D.C. When he was 11 he and his brothers moved to Elizabethton, Tennessee to live with their grandparents. His grandfather was Dave Rider who was the football coach at Elizabethton High School. The first football team that Jason Witten really belonged to was his granddad's. He played for him there and then went on to the University of Tennessee and then to Dallas in the 3rd round of the 2003 draft (69th overall). He played 17 seasons and made 11 Pro Bowls. Retired once during that time (in 2018), spent a season in a TV booth calling Monday Night Football and then returned to play two more years. When he retired for good in January 2021 he didn't go into a front office job or take a TV contract. Within a month he was the head football coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle, Texas (where his own son played) and he was there for five years. Won a state title in 2023 with the first undefeated team in that school's history and then won another one the following year. Oklahoma hired him to coach tight ends on 8th January this year (his first ever college job) and he's 44. This is his sixth season coaching anything. Be absolutely clear about the size of what's just landed on him. It's massive. He's never been a coordinator at any level above high school and is now being handed an offense in the middle of a season at a place where people expect to win every single week. Brent Venables made that call today (Monday) with the season still live and a position coach on the other end. And the final offense that Jason Witten took over was a high school in Argyle, Texas. The very first program he'd ever known was a high school program in east Tennessee which was run by the guy who took him in when he was 11. Saturday he calls plays for Oklahoma.

A new injectable gel can rebuild worn-out spinal discs instead of just masking the pain. Doctors working with US company ReGelTec are testing an injectable gel called Hydrafil for people whose spinal discs have worn down with age. The discs are the cushions between your vertebrae, and as they dry out and flatten, they can cause years of back pain. Hydrafil is injected through a needle as a warm liquid, then firms up at body temperature into a water-rich, rubbery cushion that refills the damaged disc and restores its height. In a study of 60 patients, average back pain scores fell from 7.3 to 2.1 out of 10 after a year, and disability scores dropped sharply too. Today, most treatments for worn discs manage symptoms with painkillers, injections or physical therapy, and the last resort is surgery to fuse or replace the disc. A gel that rebuilds the cushion itself could offer something in between. The early study had no comparison group, and five patients needed a procedure to remove gel that had shifted.
