Customs duties funded 80–95% of the entire federal government before the Civil War and still about HALF afterward. That’s how they built the country with a SMALL government.
Then came the 1880s… the Treasury was DROWNING in such MASSIVE SURPLUSES they created the Tariff Commission of 1882 just to figure out what the hell to do with all the extra money. They paid down the Civil War debt. They didn’t need an IRS. They didn’t need to raid your wages.
Tariffs built AMERICA.
