I need to make a very PUBLIC announcement on behalf of those of us who are 60-something. If you see a 67-year-old who seems a little boring now, understand something… WE ALREADY GOT IT IN. Like…GOT. IT. IN. 😂 We’re not sitting home on Friday night because we never knew how to have fun. We’re sitting home because WE’VE HAD ENOUGH FUN FOR THREE LIFETIMES. We went to parties in farmhouses, machine sheds, gravel pits and cornfields. Nobody sent a location because THERE WERE NO CELL PHONES. Somebody just said, “There’s a party out at Kim’s.” Kim’s in waupaca? Nobody knew. But somehow 75 people found it. We cruised Main Street for hours with absolutely nowhere to go. Gas was cheap, the music was loud, and somehow 11 people fit into a car made for five. We drank Boone’s Farm, Old Milwaukee and mysterious concoctions somebody handed us in a plastic cup. Nobody asked what was in it. You drank it and trusted the process. We closed down the bar and instead of doing the responsible thing and GOING HOME… somebody would yell: “RED ROOSTER!” Or… “LET’S GO TO THE BOONDOCKS!” And suddenly at 2:30 in the morning, the whole crew was sitting around a table eating eggs, hash browns and greasy breakfast food like we’d just finished a hard day’s work. Then somebody would say: “Well…might as well stay up now.” 😂😂 There was no Uber. No GPS. No Life360. No Find My Friends. There was just somebody saying: “Follow me. I know a shortcut.” And for reasons nobody can explain… WE FOLLOWED HIM. We made entire weekend plans without sending ONE text message. “Meet me there around 8.” That was the plan. And somehow everybody showed up. We did stupid things. We did REALLY stupid things. And the greatest gift our generation ever received was: THERE WERE NO CAMERA PHONES. There are events from approximately 1975 through 1985 that exist only in the memories of the people who were there. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHERE THEY NEED TO STAY. So yes… Now we’re 60 something. We like our recliners. We like comfortable shoes. We like restaurants at 5:00. We like being home by 8:00. And if somebody calls at 9:30 and asks: “What are you doing?” The answer is: “Why the hell are you calling me this late?” 😂 We’re not boring. WE’RE RETIRED FROM ACTIVE DUTY. We’ve already closed the bars, stayed out until sunrise, made questionable decisions and somehow lived to tell about it. So when younger people see us peacefully sitting at home and think: “Man, you guys are boring.” Sweetheart… YOU’RE NOT LOOKING AT BORING OLD PEOPLE. YOU’RE LOOKING AT RETIRED LEGENDS. And thank God there isn’t much photographic evidence. 😂😂

I think one of the greatest gifts our generation received was growing up around adults who didn't rearrange the entire world to make us comfortable. We were expected to adapt, show respect, and understand that life wasn't always going to go our way.

Nobody warned us that growing older would mean becoming the keeper of memories nobody else remembers. The family stories. The little traditions. The voices of people who are gone. Sometimes remembering feels like keeping them alive.

There was a time when your parents were young, your grandparents were still here, and everyone you loved seemed like they'd be around forever. You didn't know it then, but those were some of the richest years of your life.

John Stockton: “I remember as a rookie Larry Bird walked by our bench and said, ‘I feel like 43 tonight.’ Then he came out and scored 43 points by the 3rd quarter and checked himself out.” 🤯 Larry Bird had a special talent for getting inside his opponents' heads before the game was even over. His confidence was legendary, but what made him different was his ability to back up every word with his performance. During a 2018 appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, NBA legend John Stockton recalled an unforgettable moment from his rookie season with the Utah Jazz. “I remember as a rookie Larry Bird walked by our bench and said, ‘I feel like 43 tonight.’ Then he came out and scored 43 points by the 3rd quarter and checked himself out.” Read that again. Bird walked past the opposing bench, predicted how many points he would score, went out and delivered exactly that number before the fourth quarter even began. That was Larry Legend. He wasn't the most athletic player on the court, and he didn't need to be. His basketball IQ, shooting touch, footwork, and understanding of the game allowed him to outsmart defenders who were faster, stronger, and more explosive. Bird didn't just compete against his opponents. He challenged them mentally, too. He would tell them what he was about to do, then make them watch as he did it. Stories like this help explain why Larry Bird's reputation went far beyond his three NBA championships and three consecutive MVP awards. His confidence wasn't empty talk. He had the talent and mentality to turn his boldest predictions into reality. John Stockton experienced it firsthand. And when a legend like Stockton remembers a moment like that decades later, you know it left an impression. Larry Bird didn't need to talk trash all night. Sometimes, one sentence was enough. ☘️

These are the golden years: - Morning cuddles before school - Sticky hands grabbing your face - Snacks every 20 minutes - Tiny voices yelling “Dad!” - Bedtime stories that never end - Random hugs - Toys covering every room - Laughing until their stomachs hurt - Falling asleep on your shoulder One day, the house will be quiet. And we’ll miss every bit of this chaos.
