This week, 129 countries are participating in #MedSafetyWeek to encourage people to report medication side effects.
PSSD patients: MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!
PSSD is severely underreported. Every unreported case makes our condition harder to recognize and understand.
Reporting takes just 10–20 minutes. Your report matters.
Report your symptoms here:
@PSSDNetwork
Or
@SIDEfxHUB
Reporting can lead to real change.
Australia's medicines regulator recognized persistent sexual dysfunction after antidepressant use. Malaysia subsequently issued a similar safety communication.
More recently, the UK's influential medicines regulator, the MHRA, acknowledged PSSD by name.
Other countries may follow.
But regulators need the data to act.
If you haven't reported your PSSD, do it today. Make your case count.

Do you have lived experience with psychiatric medication use across multiple generations of your family? Are you a clinician, researcher, or other professional with relevant expertise?
Wall Street Journal reporters Shalini Ramachandran and Betsy McKay, authors of the award-winning Overmedicated America series last year, are working on a book which will examine the making of America's pill-first culture for anxiety and depression. They would like to talk with people who have experiences to share about antidepressants, including those who have had more than one generation on them. They are also seeking to talk to clinicians, researchers, current or former government/regulatory officials, and current or former pharmaceutical company executives or employees.
If interested in sharing your experience or expertise, the Google form link is located in the comments!

NEW FDA CITIZEN PETITION: WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!
Dr. Laura Farach and Antidepressant Coalition for Education (ACE) have submitted a new citizen petition calling on the FDA to require postmarketing studies and establish a national patient registry to investigate antidepressant withdrawal and other persistent adverse effects including post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (PSSD).
This petition calls for long-term research that follows patients during and after antidepressant tapering and discontinuation, investigates serious and persistent adverse outcomes, and places patients with lived experience at the center of the research process.
We need your help urging the FDA to take action.
If you have experienced antidepressant withdrawal, PSSD, or other adverse effects, or simply believe these issues deserve greater scientific attention, please consider submitting a public comment in support of our petition.
The link to submit your comment is in the comments below. Follow the link, click "Comment," complete the form, and select "Submit Comment" to ensure your comment is officially submitted to the FDA. If desired, comments can be submitted anonymously!
Please share this post to help us reach more patients, families, clinicians, and advocates.

Women’s Experiences of Antidepressant Withdrawal: U.S. Study Participants Needed
Too much remains unknown about antidepressant withdrawal. Women deserve clear information about how stopping these drugs may affect their lives and reproductive planning and research documenting their experiences is essential to closing that knowledge gap.
Dr. Laura Farach, a pediatrician with 37 years of experience, is leading a new study with researchers from several institutions. The team is recruiting women living in the United States for research interviews about prolonged antidepressant tapering and withdrawal. To be eligible, women must not have taken benzodiazepines for four or more consecutive weeks within the past two years. Additional eligibility criteria appear in the invitation below.
Participants’ stories can advance clinical recognition of prolonged withdrawal and give women of childbearing age the information needed for meaningful informed consent.
Please read the invitation in the comments and share it with others who may be interested.
STUDY INVITATION
You are invited to participate in a research study about antidepressant tapering or withdrawal experiences. Before you decide whether to participate, please read the information below carefully.
Dr. Laura Farach and her co-investigators are conducting this study. This interview study is for women who began antidepressants before the age of 24 and who are currently tapering for more than one year, have completed a multi-year taper, or report a prolonged tapering or discontinuation process that the study team determines is relevant to the study aims during screening.
The purpose is to understand and document participants' experiences, perspectives, and decision-making about antidepressant tapering and how, if at all, it relates to family planning and reproductive decisions. The interview will include questions about medical history, social history, medication history, tapering history, sexual functioning, and family planning history. Questions about sexuality are optional and may be skipped. The interview is expected to take approximately 60 minutes, with an optional follow-up if needed; interviews may occur over multiple sessions if preferred.
If you become upset or distressed during the interview, we can pause or stop, and you will be encouraged to seek support from your established healthcare providers, crisis resources, or trusted supports as appropriate. If you disclose suicidal thoughts or feel unable to stay safe, the interview will be paused or stopped, and you will be encouraged to contact appropriate supports or emergency/crisis resources. If you believe that discussing these experiences may cause you significant emotional distress, you may decide not to participate.
This study is for research purposes only and does not involve medical care, diagnosis, or treatment. Participation does not create a physician-patient relationship with Dr. Farach or any member of the study team.
Participation is voluntary, there is no compensation, and you may skip any question, pause, reschedule, or stop the interview at any time. You may withdraw from the study at any time.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Dr. Farach at [email protected] for additional information and eligibility screening. Please write the word STUDY in the subject line. Please do not include medical or other sensitive personal information in your email. Email communication may not be secure; please provide scheduling availability only.

Excellent regulatory update in the UK regarding #antidepressants. The new measures focus on ensuring patients are fully informed about both the risks of suicidal thoughts and behaviors and the risks of persistent sexual dysfunction (#PSSD) before starting treatment. Clear, transparent risk communication is vital for true informed consent in #mentalhealth care. nitter.cf/MHRAgovuk/status/21106… @MHRAgovuk
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr
We applaud the UK’s MHRA for implementing these long-overdue measures to inform patients of the risks of suicidality when initiating antidepressant treatment or adjusting dosages, as well as the risk of persistent sexual dysfunction.
We urge the U.S. @FDA to follow suit and, alongside other @HHSGov agencies, prioritize helping those who have already been harm.
Years-long sufferers of PSSD @PSSDNetwork and protracted withdrawal deserve acknowledgment, answers, and, most importantly, effective treatments.

Patients often wonder what they can do to help bring safer deprescribing. All should report their adverse drug reactions and problems deprescribing to FDA via Medwatch Reporting. FDA is taking them seriously, reading them, and contacting patients. See link in comments below.

NPR @NPR Pulse program is running a segment on Quitting Antidepressants this weekend following the experience of Erica Gerard.
I think the major problem for people who want to suppress the harms of these drugs is that 1 in 6 journalists, politicians, doctors, car mechanics, schoolteachers are on these drugs and many will have tried to stop them and encountered grave difficulties and these people talk to their friends, families and audience and so it is just a matter of time before more people catch on that 8 week studies that minimise harms do not capture what is happening to long-term users.
It would be better to work with patient groups to help manage this harm rather than deny it - it will only make the problem bigger and further erode trust and faith from the public in psychiatric institutions.

Even Tyler Black has adopted gradual (exponential?) tapering over months.

Unprecedented suicidal or violent thoughts are NOT a normal adjustment phase when starting, switching, or discontinuing psychiatric drugs. It is a dangerous sign of an adverse drug reaction.
𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭: "I’m having really frightening thoughts… my mind won’t slow down. I wasn’t suicidal until I started this medication."
𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: "That’s a normal adjustment phase. It can take about six weeks to settle. Let’s increase your dose in the meantime."

Serious misinformation from #LindsayClancy’s prescribing doctor, who is now being sued. Abruptly stopping Zoloft, even 50 mg after short-term use,can carry serious risks. Everyone reacts differently to medications. Competent, knowledgeable medical care matters.#LindsayClancyTrial
Abruptly stopping 50 mg of sertraline (Zoloft) can carry serious, life-threatening risks. According to the literature, at this dose, an estimated 74–85% of serotonin transporters in the brain remain occupied, meaning 50 mg is far from a small dose in terms of its pharmacologic effect. Withdrawal is likely to occur after abrupt discontinuation, especially among long-term users. Many people who have experienced severe and protracted SSRI withdrawal injuries report being harmed even after tapering from 50 mg using conventional linear tapering schedules.
Dr. Jennifer Tufts, who was Lindsay Clancy’s prescribing psychiatrist leading up to the unthinkable tragedy, told Ms. Clancy’s defense attorney, the jurors, and the American public that it is okay to abruptly stop 50 mg of Zoloft.
Please do not abruptly stop an antidepressant. Tapering should be individualized, with gradual, often hyperbolic dose reductions that become progressively smaller as the dose decreases. For many, this is a months- or years-long process.
Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Clancy family.
