New paper out! 🌊 How does sampling effort affect biodiversity estimates in trawl surveys? We explore this with a case study on demersal communities in Patagonia.
Biodiversity monitoring is often "imperfect" due to shifting sampling effort. We propose a robust framework to standardize effort and reach solid ecological conclusions without discarding valuable datasets.

🚢 🧑🔬 María Emilia Bravo es la jefa científica de la campaña “Vida en los extremos”, que el próximo 14 de diciembre zarpará hacia el Mar Argentino para explorar sus ecosistemas quimiosintéticos, ambientes submarinos habitados por una peculiar fauna que se alimenta de energía química.
🗺️ 🔬 La investigadora del @IGEBA1, @CONICETDialoga y @Exactas_UBA ya ha visto esos ambientes con sus propios ojos: es la argentina que más descendió hacia las profundidades océanicas, en Alaska, a más de 4.900 metros bajo la superficie, en el célebre sumergible Alvin.
🤿 ⚓ Ahora encabezará la tercera y última expedición impulsada por el @SchmidtOcean en el talud continental argentino, que será liderada por Exactas UBA y tendrá la participación, a bordo del buque Falkor (too), de 25 científicas y científicos de tres países.
🐠 🌊 En esta entrevista, Bravo describe los objetivos científicos del proyecto, cuenta cómo la fauna quimiosintética le “voló la cabeza” y por qué, buscando filtraciones de gases en el fondo océanico, se transformó en una bióloga experta en geofísica marina.

Totally stunned, we watched 2 fin whales lunge feeding at the surface for around 30 mins. Dolphins, bluefin tuna and seabirds rounded up the shoals of fish into baitballs, allowing this incredible feeding event to take place in the Celtic Sea. – at Wales, United Kingdom

This came into view as the @Space_Station passed over the south Atlantic Ocean just east of Argentina. They are from a massive fleet of fishing vessels with spectacularly bright LEDs which help to attract the right kind of "fish" (squid).

I remember breaking down to my Ph.D. advisor about how stupid I felt while troubleshooting a problem in my project when she handed me this paper. Years later it is still relevant to young students starting off in Science. It's ok to feel stupid, we all do on a regular basis.
