🚨 "Long Way To Go" For South Asian Footballers, Says Kandola - Hereford's Kandola says South Asian representation in football still has "a long way to go" - Admits players from his background remain countable "on one or two hands" - Comes after winning Non-League Player of the Year at the 2026 Asian Football Awards - Says he's proud of trying to be a role model and boost involvement in the game - Spent 13 years at Wolves Academy from age eight before moving into non-league - Had two seasons at Kidderminster before joining Hereford on a two-year deal in June - FA data shows South Asian players still make up just over 1% at elite level - Points to Telford's Mal Benning, with 500+ league games, as an example to follow - Hopes eligibility rule changes could one day let him represent India internationally - Asian Football Awards founder Rihal says scouting pathways remain the next challenge

Proud to have attended the 6th edition of the Asian Football Awards this week at The Clementine, Syon Park. What made the night even more special was seeing GNG FC Leicester out in full numbers. As a club, we turned up to show our collective support for this incredible celebration of South Asian excellence. Having dedicated decades to building up GNG's grassroots foundations (and being a past award winner myself), seeing our team sitting together at a national gala like this was a truly proud moment. It was also fantastic to witness Mal Benning rightfully take home the prestigious Pioneer Award. Having achieved over 500 professional appearances while continuously breaking barriers, his recognition is a testament to the heights our community can reach. Balancing my civic responsibilities as the Lord Mayor of Leicester with my lifelong passion for grassroots sports development reinforces a vital truth: inclusion is built on the pitches of our local parks long before it reaches the professional ranks. Huge congratulations to Mal and all the 2026 winners. GNG FC will continue doing what we do best—breaking barriers, building talent, and showing up for the community.
