Amazing new biorxiv on #DireWolf from @colossal @BenLamm - revealing their ancestry and many new biological features #paleogenomics
Dire Wolves were closer to wolves than jackals and also had white/light colored coats. Check out our new paper with more than 500x more genetic data than anyone has ever had on dire wolves. Also check out the incredible author list on the paper. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

We’re Colossal Biosciences, the de-extinction company responsible for bringing back the first animals from extinction. Our dire wolf pups, Romulus and Remus, were born on October 1, 2024. Watch these pups grow up on our YouTube channel. Link in bio.
These two wolves were returned from extinction using genetic edits derived from a complete dire wolf genome, meticulously reconstructed from ancient DNA found in fossils dating back 11,500 and 72,000 years. This achievement is the result of years of pioneering science, tireless innovation, and unwavering dedication.
It marks a major milestone not only for our company, but for science, conservation, and humanity. With the birth of Romulus and Remus, de-extinction is no longer theory—it’s reality. There’s more work ahead, but this moment redefines what’s possible for the planet’s future.

For the past two years, I’ve been quietly working with @BenLamm and the other brilliant minds at @Colossal Biosciences, joining their mission to de-extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth, the dodo, and the thylacine. Today, I’m excited to share a groundbreaking achievement: the creation of the Woolly Mouse! These little guys have been genetically edited to grow long, golden hair, similar to a woolly mammoth, marking a small yet huge step in our journey to revive extinct species. Working with these geniuses has been an inspiring and humbling journey, and I can’t wait to share even more exciting updates VERY soon. For now, enjoy this short video I produced with @GorskiEvan where Chief Science Officer Dr. Beth Shapiro (@bonesandbugs) explains how and why her incredible team brought these adorable creatures to life. Big things have small beginnings... 🦣🧬🐭
A tiny Colossal woolly mouse is the key to the de-extinction of a woolly mammoth? Uhm…say what? With seven edited genes, this tiny pioneer exhibits mammoth-like traits, including golden fur and cold resistance. Watch as Dr. Beth Shapiro explains how this breakthrough is a tiny step toward the de-extinction of the mammoth 🦣
