When a fixed deposit approaches maturity, the decision to renew should go beyond the interest rate being offered. Liquidity requirements, interest rate expectations and post tax returns are equally important considerations.
In an article published in Financial Express (India), Mukesh Kumawat, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on how investors can approach fixed deposit renewals in a changing interest rate environment.
He explains that investors expecting interest rates to remain elevated or rise further may consider avoiding a complete lock in of their maturity proceeds into long tenure deposits. Renewing a portion while retaining flexibility with the remaining amount can help investors respond to future interest rate movements without leaving the entire corpus idle.
He also highlights the importance of evaluating post tax returns rather than focusing solely on advertised FD rates. Depending on their tax bracket, investment horizon and risk appetite, investors can compare fixed deposits with alternatives such as debt and arbitrage mutual funds, while considering the differences in risk and liquidity.
The larger perspective is that an objective driven approach to reinvestment should balance returns, liquidity and tax efficiency while remaining aligned with individual wealth goals.

Small-cap Funds Are Drawing Investor Money. Are They Right for Your Portfolio?
Small-cap funds have seen consistent positive inflows since April 2024, reflecting sustained investor interest in the category. Over the last seven months, they attracted an average inflow of around โน7,000 crore a month, with September 2026 recording the highest monthly inflow of โน9,039 crore. They also recorded the highest inflows among active equity mutual fund categories for the third month in a row. But should investors increase their exposure to small caps simply because more money is flowing into them?
The opportunity comes with higher risk
Smaller companies can offer considerable room for growth, making them an interesting part of an equity portfolio. Investing in small caps also gives investors exposure to a different segment of the market, alongside large-cap and mid-cap companies.
However, these companies can be more vulnerable to changes in business conditions and market sentiment, which can lead to sharp falls in their share prices. Recoveries may also take longer than expected, making small-cap funds a riskier investment for those who may need their money in the near future or are uncomfortable with significant ups and downs.
How much should you invest in small caps?
The right allocation to small caps depends on how much of your portfolio is already invested in them, so the answer will vary from one investor to another. Those with high exposure, say 80%, may need to reduce it, while investors with limited, say 10%, or no exposure may consider increasing their allocation. The aim is to maintain a balanced mix of large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap investments based on your financial goals, investment horizon, and comfort with market fluctuations, rather than increasing your exposure simply because the category is attracting strong inflows.
Our preferred market-cap allocation is 50โ55% in large caps, 20โ25% in mid-caps, and the remaining allocation in small caps. This approach allows investors to participate in the growth opportunities offered by smaller companies without allowing small caps to take up too large a share of their equity portfolio.
Getting the allocation right
Diversification is not just about reducing risk, but about building an all-weather portfolio that can navigate different market conditions. Small-cap funds can contribute to this by offering growth opportunities alongside large-cap and mid-cap investments, but they do not need to make up a large share of every investor's portfolio.
Protima Dhawan, Director and Unit Head, Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, shares her perspective with Moneycontrol on how investors can interpret foreign portfolio investor activity without reacting to headline outflow numbers.
While overall FPI flows have remained significantly negative, Protima highlights that foreign investors continue to participate in select opportunities in the primary market, particularly large IPOs. This indicates that part of the institutional liquidity is moving from the secondary market towards the primary market.
For SIP investors, foreign selling should not become a trigger to stop investing. SIPs are designed to invest across market cycles, and periods of correction can allow investors to accumulate more units at lower prices.
The uncomplicated approach is to stay focused on long term wealth goals and investment discipline rather than reacting to short term movements in foreign investor flows.

Wealth decisions donโt have to be complicated. What matters is understanding your choices, knowing what works for you, and having the clarity to move forward with confidence.
Because the right guidance makes even the difficult parts easier to navigate.
Chirag Muni, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, shares his perspective with Financial Express on what rising bond yields could mean for debt fund investors.
With the RBI raising the repo rate by 25 basis points and the 10 year government bond yield moving above 7%, debt mutual funds are seeing near term mark to market pressure.
Chirag highlights that short and medium duration funds appear better placed from a risk adjusted perspective in the current environment, as their lower duration can reduce the impact if yields rise further. Long duration funds may see higher near term volatility, but they could become more attractive if inflation moderates and the interest rate cycle eventually turns.
The key is not to invest simply because yields have risen. The duration of the fund should align with the investorโs time horizon and the objective of the allocation. Investors with longer horizons can also evaluate target maturity funds aligned with when the money may be required.
The uncomplicated approach is to match debt allocation with the goal and investment horizon rather than react to short term movements in yields.

Small cap mutual funds continue to attract attention, but sustaining long term wealth creation requires looking beyond recent returns.
In an article published in The Economic Times, Jasmeet Singh, Executive Director, Anand Rathi Wealth, shares his perspective on the outlook for small cap funds and the importance of maintaining a disciplined investment approach.
He remains positive on the segment over the medium to long term, highlighting that the recent market correction has made valuations more comfortable, with negative froth of 16% to 20%. Improving earnings momentum, including 38% earnings growth in the broader mid and small cap space during Q1, further supports the fundamental outlook.
However, he emphasises that small caps are inherently more volatile and may experience sharper corrections during periods of tighter liquidity and global uncertainty. Recent performance should therefore not become a reason to aggressively increase exposure or attempt to time the market.
For long term investors, he highlights the importance of gradually building exposure through SIPs or staggered investments, with a diversified market capitalisation allocation of 55% large caps, 23% mid caps and 22% small caps. An approach centred on actively diversified equity funds can help maintain exposure across sectors and market cycles while supporting portfolio stability and liquidity.
The focus remains on disciplined allocation, diversification and aligning investments with long term wealth goals rather than reacting to short term market movements.

- Investors should avoid chasing gold after sharp price rallies and consider the risk of buying at elevated levels.
- Gold should complement equity in a portfolio, with allocation guided by existing gold and debt holdings.
