You don't need postmortems on this election, we had ample premorterm: Ruy Teixeira warning about this in books and @TheLibPatriot in considerable depth. For considerable time. He got drummed out of Democratic polite company for his troubles. @eduwonk I've highlighted the education piece of this repeatedly. Public education touches people's lives directly and is a place Dems have decided to highlight how out of the mainstream they are with no strategy to offset that. eduwonk.substack.com/p/dems-… Elitism, arrogance, and cultural insularity are dooming the Democrats. It used to be Rs needed a great candidate and campaign to win big nationally (eg W. Bush, Reagan) then even that wasn't enough (Romney). Now a good R campaign can overcome a defective candidate (Trump 2x!). And hidden in plain sight was that although the candidate was/is a hot mess, the Trump campaign was pretty good. Everyone saying it's too early for recriminations is covering their ass. It's the time because elections have consequences and this one will. This was absolutely avoidable, politics isn't the weather, and while Harris wasn't a great candidate, she wasn't awful, and this was winnable in a way that might cause angst on MSNBC, faculty lounges, and with the groups but would have sounded right at home on job sites, in union halls, and bars where Americans go about their business every day without the shibboleths of the left or the hate of the far right.

Remember that hearing with the college presidents?
"Law firms that struck deals with President Donald Trump in early 2025 can expect to be subpoenaed by the House Judiciary Committee next year, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said." yahoo.com/news/politics/arti…

A Senate bill to repeal the EFTC has 36 senators on it, and a House version has 112 members. Those numbers will rise after January when the new Congress is seated. The clock is ticking.

"I’m not saying this is what’s going to happen, I am suggesting I’d keep an eye on how this plays out and not assume anything except that the President pretty consistently acts in what he sees as his best interest at any point in time." @eduwonk (link in reply).

Tough on crime and pro-death penalty are not synonymous. You can be the former and reject the latter. The sooner politicians can make that clear the better.

I keep hearing people say "I think she might keep Morath." I dunno...this is hard to walk back and sometimes pols just say what they mean.
Gina Hinojosa delivers the agenda for Public Education Texas: “On Day One, I will fire Mike Morath and we will work tirelessly to repair the damage of the Texas voucher scam - And end an era in which our schools are sold for parts:”

This. And only an issue at varsity & elite level sports, and where you have to balance fairness, safety, & inclusion. Overall goal should be: Get as many kids playing sports and moving as possible.
I think it means that voters don’t hate trans people and welcome them in civic and professional life but think it’s unfair to have trans girls and women competing in women and girls sports.

We've been unable to have a reasonable conversation on this issue (eg the idea below) so we keep getting unreasonable ones. Yet the voters seem to get it and are at once against discrimination and for fairness/safety in sports. the74million.org/article/rot…

This one is a bummer not just because of Tuberville but because @DougJones would have been a fantastic governor, thoughtful person.
Just now seeing how close #ALGov was. Tuberville is not a campaign dynamo — he coasts on Alabama’s GOP partisan advantage and doesn’t debate. Def helped Rep. Figures (who beat a GOP gerrymander) that the high black turnout was matched by Rs yawning and sharing memes.

Dems winning a lot of seats in competitive places they'll have to defend again could be a healthy moderating force in our politics. Or this tweet may age poorly.
The Dems who won last night are a lot more moderate than people think
