Kudos to Dana Kennedy, for making this lovely, pressed flower cover image for her paper. "Pressed-flower art representing heterochromatin gene silencing in Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Each distinct flower symbolizes HP1/Swi6, Clr4, nucleosomes, and post-translational (cont)
Tour de force by @drkennedy93 !

HP1/Swi6 phosphorylation is required for H3K9 trimethylation spreading but not nucleation. Why? Phosphorylation tunes the bulk chromatin affinity into a regime where HP1 is specific for the H3K9me3 state and not H3K9me0.
Question re: @BioRadLifeSci 491 Prep Cell: I have one, but need elution frit and tubing kit. Those are out of stock. The best advice I got from the sales rep is buy a whole new one ($7000) to get those <$100 items. Anyone know where to get such accessories? so far came up empty.
Throughout my PhD working on phytochrome signaling I always looked up to and took inspiration from Dr Chory creative and important work. I am truly sad for this loss. A giant in the field.

Over 20 years ago, the Eissenberg lab showed that phosphorylation of HP1 is important for its silencing function. Why? Key observations from our study in fission yeast:
7. We suspect that increased oligomerization by NTE phos further partitions the protein into heterochromatin foci and supports spreading. Thanks to great collaborators Rob Maxwell at UC Berkeley, the Chang lab’s @JoelLemiere and Catherine Tan, and Julian Braxton, now at Caltech.

What it feels like to be a basic scientist amidst the broad shift toward translational research…
Awesome!
BREAKING NEWS
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”
