Your fear isn’t a character flaw or a faith failure. It’s an attention problem, and it’s fixable in about 60 seconds. I learned that the hard way in a tent operating room in Balad, Iraq. Mortars were coming in. The ground shook. The alarms were screaming. Fear hit hard; heart racing, thoughts spinning, every instinct telling me to freeze or run. But there was a patient on the table with a shattered skull and a brain that still needed to be saved. I couldn’t afford to leave the present moment. I had to stay with the next instrument, the next vessel, the next careful move. I had to keep operating. That same skill is what the psalmist describes: Psalm 94:17-19 (NLT) Unless the Lord had helped me, I would soon have settled in the silence of the grave. I cried out, “I am slipping!” but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me. When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer. He felt the slip. He noticed the fear and the multiplying cares. He didn’t pretend they weren’t real. But he refused to stay there. He returned his attention to the greater reality that was actually holding him up. That’s Self-Brain Surgery. It’s how you keep operating when life tries to paralyze you. Stress pulls your attention into the past (“I should have…”) or the future (“What if…”) and keeps it there. The only place you can actually do anything is right now. When your mind repeatedly notices the thought or feeling, accepts that it’s present without letting it become the whole story, and returns attention to this moment and to God’s unfailing love, you train the brain’s networks to stop treating the alarm as the final truth. Prefrontal regions get better at regulating the emotional signals. The mind stays in charge. Today’s 60-second operation: 1. Notice the stress or the “I’m slipping” thought the moment it shows up. 2. Accept that the feeling is here, without agreeing that you’re doomed or faithless. 3. Return to the present: one breath, the truth that God’s unfailing love is supporting you right now, and the next small action that belongs to this hour. Then keep operating. Not because the fear is gone, but because you’ve chosen to stay with what’s true and what’s in front of you. That’s the skill. And it’s trainable, starting right now. Save this for the next time it feels like you're being mortared. And share with a friend who needs to know fear is not a faith problem. Follow me for daily connections between neuroscience and faith to help you thrive. And click the link in my bio to learn more about self-brain surgery.

Tolkien knew personal loss to an extent that far exceeds the vast majority of us, yet his story extols "pity, and endurance in hope" among the chief heroic qualities. He is a shining example of one who identifies with light and high beauty, even in a forsaken land.

🌪️ Tornado in Kansas City this morning? What do y’all think? This was taken around 7:30 AM by Ryan Wilkins near KU Med, looking north. There were scattered storms in the vicinity at the time. Perhaps a gustnado, some other type of scud cloud or steam? I need to do some more digging into the radar data and other atmospheric conditions from that time. Posted Tuesday November 3, 2026.

C.S. Lewis said: “The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. That’s the deal.” The price of love is loss. The greater the love, the deeper the grief. You don’t get one without the other. And yet, when I read that, I asked myself, When did I agree to this? No one tells you that this is part of it. No one warns you that loving deeply means, one day, you may grieve just as deeply. No one hands you a contract that says: “This will be worth it, but it will also break you.” That the same heart capable of holding immeasurable joy will one day have to hold unbearable sorrow. And yet, here we are. It’s easy to resent that. To wish it away. To long for a life untouched by loss. But if given the choice, would I undo it? Would I erase the love just to escape the pain? The answer is always no. Because grief isn’t just pain; it’s proof. Proof that something beautiful existed. That we were given something worth missing. That it was worth it. Even knowing how it ends. Even knowing how much it hurts. It doesn’t make it easier. But it reframes it. Because if grief is the price of love, then it means we had something worth grieving. So, on the hard days, you must remind yourself: You wouldn’t trade the love to escape the grief. You wouldn’t erase the happiness to avoid the pain. And you will endure a lifetime of missing, for the privilege of having loved. I guess that’s the deal.

Orwell's great observation in "Nineteen Eighty-Four" was that to shrink a person's vocabulary is to shrink his capacity to think. An impoverished version of English removes the mental tools needed to formulate and communicate complex (and dissenting) ideas. Such is the deep, complex relationship between language and thought. We don't read "difficult books" to say that we've read difficult books. We read them because they expand the boundaries of what we are capable of thinking and feeling — we ascend to their level. Vocabulary helps us to recognize truths otherwise beyond our grasp. This revelation is worse than you may think. This must be reversed.
I am speechless. Thomas Aquinas College just dropped a study on the rigor of the new SAT. It compares the 1980/87 test with 2026. The findings should terrify every parent and teacher... Vocabulary has collapsed. Old SAT: 70.6% of questions tested vocab. New SAT: 15%. The old test forced students to know a wide range of words through analogies, antonyms, and sentence completions. The new test abandoned that. Most vocab questions now just ask students to fill in one blank from context. Reading passages also got radically shorter (average ~97 words vs 300–340). The new test uses short expository passages and hands you the necessary background knowledge inside the text. The older tests leaned much more heavily on argumentative and persuasive writing, assumed far more historical, scientific, and cultural knowledge, and penalized students who lacked it. This is a redefinition of what "college readiness" means. If you believe that kids should develop rigorous vocabulary, be capable of sustained reading, and possess background knowledge, I have bad news for you. The SAT no longer measures these. If you want a future where children can actually read difficult texts and construct complex arguments, the SAT must be replaced now. This cannot go on.

🚨🚨 Update: We ran every county in Kansas. It's worse than we thought.🚨🚨 Using the newest Census count of eligible citizens, JoCo isn't ~100%. It's 105%. 475,032 registered vs 450,162 citizens 18+. And it doesn't stop at Johnson County. Kansas has registered 95% of its eligible citizens. Statewide. 2,027,520 registered (KS SOS, Oct 2026) 2,134,491 citizens 18+ (Census) Nationally it's about 74%. Kansas is at 95%. 27 of our 105 counties have MORE registrations than eligible citizens. Bourbon: 120%. Meade: 119%. Johnson: 105%. 274,909 inactive registrations are still on the rolls. That's 1 in 7 names. This doesn't prove fraud. But it shows rolls nobody is cleaning, and every dead-weight name is a mail ballot someone could cast fraudulently. Inflated rolls are an open door to fraud. Good enough should not be the enemy of perfect in election security. @KansasSOS @KSAGOffice @CivilRights @AAGDhillon @USAO_Kansas **Full list and source data below**
🚨🚨 Johnson County, KS has about as many registered voters as it has citizens old enough and eligible to vote. 🚨🚨 ~475,000 registered (Sept 2026) ~465,000–475,000 eligible citizens (Census/ACS est.-- ~22% under 18 and 4.4% are non-citizens) That's ~100%+ of the county registered to vote! For comparison, about 74% of voting-age Americans are registered (Census, 2024). Most US counties land between 65% and 85%. JoCo at ~100% isn't normal. We have been flagging this since 2021. Bloated voters rolls are filled up with names that don't match real, current voters. That's the danger. Every extra name is an opening: a ballot someone could request or cast in a name nobody is using anymore. And Kansas doesn't verify citizenship when you register. Coldwater's non-citizen mayor pleaded guilty to this April. Inflated rolls are an open door to election fraud. Good enough should not be the enemy of perfect in election security. @CivilRights @AAGDhillon @KansasSOS @KSAGOffice @jocoelection @USAO_Kansas

The most honorable thing I have ever seen a man do is to go to a job he hates, and be surrounded by people he doesn’t like, day after day, year after year, because the people he loves are counting on him.
I’ve been red pilled, black pilled, white pilled, clear pilled. All the pills. I don’t even know which one this is, but it’s one of the strongest ones I’ve had in a long long time. The desperation in his voice. You can see the sight of his kids in his eyes when he says he’s supposed to be home with them. You can see the math he’s doing in his head as he calculates how much money he has left, and how much he needs for his mortgage, and when it’s due. What the hell is the American dream anymore? Is this what it’s about? Is there anyone who would say this guy isn’t working his ass off? For what? So that 25% of his income can go to a government that wastes it on a bunch of shit he didn’t vote for? Subsidizing the food he stocks grocery stores with for people who don’t work a 1,000th of how hard he works to buy groceries with EBT cards that he pays for, which then drives up the cost of groceries for him and his family that he pays for out of his paycheck because he’s doing it the right way. This entire system is shit. It’s shit. There is no nicer way to put it. It is dog. shit. This guy should be working a 9-5 at a job that gives him dignity so that he can be at home with his kids at a decent time. Instead he’s some jerk off’s content. His stressed out, end of his rope reaction is some asshole’s income. This is bleak stuff. Absolutely bleak.

Feelings are not facts. They’re chemical events in your brain. Most of what you automatically feel doesn’t turn out to be true. If you learn to question the feeling before you react, look at it like a scientist, and operate on it like a surgeon, you separate yourself from 99% of the people struggling in work, marriage, dating, and every other area of life. Physiology doesn’t always tell the true story: Sometimes it’s dangerous. Sometimes it’s accurate. But not every time. Before you react, question it.
Separate feelings from facts.
Operate on your brain so it stops operating on you. Say it with me: “I must believe that feelings are not facts. They are chemical events in my brain.” That’s the second commandment of self-brain surgery.

Top Overnight News For most of the war, Iran had an invaluable cushion: dozens of oil tankers holding millions of barrels of crude sitting safely in waters in Asia. Tehran steadily sold the oil to China, bringing in billions of much-needed cash. Now, that floating storage is gone. By mid-October, the reserves were fully depleted, according to analysts at Kpler, as a U.S. naval blockade prevented Iran from replacing the crude it normally sells to Chinese refineries.
