The American Thoracic Society (ATS) strongly opposes the White House’s new executive order affecting federal childhood vaccine policy. “This action is not grounded in scientific evidence and risks further eroding public confidence in the safety of routinely recommended childhood immunizations. The executive order directly affects prevention of influenza, COVID-19, and RSV, respiratory infections that can cause severe illness, hospitalization, respiratory failure, and death, particularly among children with underlying lung disease or other medical vulnerabilities. The order will result in delays, lower vaccination rates among U.S. children, and more disease outbreaks.” - Tina Hartert, MD, MPH, co-chair, ATS Vaccine Initiative Advisory Panel. The ATS will continue to advocate for evidence-based, public health-focused approach to childhood vaccination policy.
