My new Twins mailbag column includes:
- Copying the Brewers and Rays
- Behind on analytics + scouting
- Time for Pohlad action, not talk
- Prepping for 2028 rotation exits
- Non-tender + trade candidates
- Jeffers, Lewis, and Ryan realism

League source tells me the Twins declined their side of Joe Ryan's mutual $13 million option for 2027, as expected.
That simply means Ryan remains under team control for 2027 via arbitration, where he's projected to make around $9.6 million.
No change to Ryan's overall status.
As expected, Josh Bell is officially a free agent. League source tells me the Twins declined their side of his $10 million mutual option for 2027.
Bell now joins Ryan Jeffers, A.J. Minter, and Taylor Rogers as the Twins' departing free agents: aarongleeman.com/twins-depar…

Like every small-market team, the Twins want to copy the Brewers and Rays because of their success with low payrolls.
But emulating the Brewers and Rays requires a different type of investment, behind the scenes, and the Twins fall short there too.

Anthony Banda was arbitration eligible, with a projected $2.3 million salary, but he's not expected back from lat surgery until mid-2027.
So this is basically the Twins non-tendering him early.
Twins' offseason roster housecleaning has started.
Anthony Banda, Aaron Sabato, and Tristan Gray have been removed from the 40-man roster and are now free agents.
MLB payroll isn't the only way to measure spending.
Unfortunately, beyond just shrinking payroll, the Twins are also way behind the Brewers, Rays, and other good teams when it comes to behind-the-scenes investment in scouting and analytics.

Deron Johnson, who was let go by the Twins last month, quickly finds a new home in the Mets' front office with Derek Falvey. nitter.cf/WillSammon/status/2115…

I'm really happy for Brewers fans.
I hope it feels every bit as great as you always imagined it would.
Ernie Johnson is the best at the host/air traffic controller job in the history of sports television, and to me it's not even particularly close.
Four decades as an elite, calm, efficient point guard with constant chaos swirling around him is incredible.

Let's get weird.
I ran into @DaneMizutani at the grocery store and forced him to talk Vikings with me. But he brought up J.J. McCarthy on his own, so I don't feel as bad.
