“Do you think I have come to bring peace? No, but the sword, to divide.” (Matthew 10:34) We are fools if we think that the mission is to avoid the inevitable divide that comes from speaking the truth. We become people pleasers, pleasers of men and not God, when we only say what is comfortable. That’s not what Jesus did, nor is that why He died. He died because He spoke the truth (John 18:37). We must speak the truth in love, but also remember that it is love to speak the truth. In a just war, should men of good will, either by volunteering or, in the case of a draft, being called to duty, this certainly can be a noble task and one that fulfills the requirements of justice and the virtue of patriotism. Such can be said of American involvement in World War II. In such a war, seeking the protection and blessing of God, even asking for victory over evil, is not at issue. But in the case of an unjust war, it would be very wrong to invoke the Lord. Here is perhaps the context of what Pope Leo XVI meant when he said that Jesus does not hear the prayers of those who wage war. A fundamental issue with US involvement in the conflict between Israel and Iran is that very question: Is this a just war? The question of whether this is a just war is one thing, but what is more diabolical is the notion of entering into a foreign conflict under the mistaken notion of Christian Zionism, that there is a biblical allegiance owed to Israel as a means of quickening or hastening the Second Coming of Christ, as well as the idea that to oppose the actions of the modern state of Israel is tantamount to not “blessing Israel” and thus opposing God’s will. The only true opposition to God’s will is rejecting Our Lord Jesus Christ as the New Temple and rejecting the Catholic Church as possessing the fullness of truth on what it means to belong to God’s Chosen; to be Christian. We may, in our Christian duty, help our neighbor in need, even in times of war. But to assert that the basis for this aid or allegiance is based on Christian Zionistic principles is erroneous and dangerous. When we send our sons and daughters to war in the name of Christ, “Lord, send me.” You can blame the Christian Zionist in pushing for engagement in the name of Christ. You can also blame every person who had the responsibility to speak; every person or clergyman who was silent and who failed to speak this truth out of a mistaken notion of unity, as well as cowardice and the fear of being called antisemitic. I love all people, Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. But I will not be silenced or pressured to hide my Catholic Faith nor oppose present political leadership, which would have us go to war in the name of Christ out of a heretical Christian Zionistic position. @SecWar @Pontifex @realDonaldTrump
