Max Strus says making the NBA required him to accept he doesn’t have a bag anymore and that shooting got him on the floor but defense would keep him out there
“I don’t have a bag. I used to have a bag back in college, but I don’t anymore because you find what your niche is and you just go at it.”
“I knew shooting the basketball was going to get me on the floor, and then I knew playing defense was going to keep me on the floor. I’ll guard the best player. I don’t care. They’re going to score on me because everybody’s that good. You can’t really stop anybody anyway.”
“So it’s like, how can I make it as tough as possible on them? I don’t need to shoot the ball. I’m all right. I can do other things that I know are helping the team win. How can I make Donovan Mitchell better? How can I make James Harden better? How can I make Jarrett Allen better?”
“If I feel like I haven’t gotten a shot, it’s like, all right, go crash the offensive rebound and get it. I’m not going to sit here and cry to myself about not shooting the ball or not being involved. Make yourself useful.”
“My first couple years [in Miami], I don’t think I dribbled the ball once. Come off a handoff and shoot, come off a screen and shoot, and then defend and rebound. That’s all I did.”
“As you continue to build more confidence within the team, within the coach, they put you in positions where, all right, now I can do a little bit more.”
“You’ve got to have the humbleness to humble yourself to, ‘I’m not that guy anymore. I can’t be that guy anymore.’ But then be ready for the opportunity when it does come, ‘No, I could still be that guy. That’s just not what we need right now. But when we do, I got you.’”

College Coaches! Trust me, you will want to be there!
I love this. Must watch. So many great insights.
Scouting in the NBA is incredibly thorough, not just some guy on TV giving his thoughts based on watching a little bit of game film.
Great story…also…
We can get tunnel access at Bulls games +met @jalenbrunson1 -he signed a Brunson shirt for my 7 y/o. My son said “I can’t wait to wear this to school!” We had to tell him he can’t wear it now due to the auto. He was sad-so we had to buy him a new shirt!
Jalen Brunson says Michael Jordan offered to autograph his jersey when he was 6, and he told MJ no
"every away arena I got the home team's jersey, just something me and my mom did. so we go to DC, Jordan was on the Wizards, and I had Jordan's jersey on"
"after the game I got to go see my dad in the locker room, went to the other locker room with one of their coaches, and I met Michael"
"he's like, you want me to sign your jersey? I said no, you'll mess it up. I was dead serious"
"I'm growing up in the NBA, seeing all these players all the time, taking it for granted. I had no signatures, nothing. I was like, I don't need signatures, I'm good. don't mess my jersey up, MJ"
Thanks for having me on!
Great episode with @AdamDeMong ! Give it a listen.

This is a common idea that is shared by basketball fans but the economics are not this simple. Revenues are less than expressed here and not all costs are accurate or accounted for. I agree that events are more expensive now, but the profit isn’t as high as portrayed.
Great thoughts by Ricky.
Most people don’t understand the dynamics of events and the costs involved, they just see the sticker shock at the entry. I believe that event entry is too high BUT it’s much more complex than people realize. Lots of layers to understanding it.
🌶️ AAU Admissions Hot-Take💰
I’ve been on all sides of this - college coach, general admission, event operator.
I get the frustration. I hate that if our family wanted to go watch 1 of our kids play it would be $200+ for weekend admission on top of all the other fees, travel expenses etc.
BUT
Here’s the reality. EVERYTHING is expensive right now.
I don’t think most people realize the costs for the facility (especially large convention centers) insurance, table workers, referees, event staff, etc.
It’s a HIGHLY competitive space, with lots of people wanting to run events.
If someone could run a large, quality event and charge $15 for weekend admission, THEY WOULD DO IT.
Because every team and family would want to play in that event.
But there’s a reason you don’t see quality events at that admission price, and it isn’t “greed”.
It’s because whoever ran that event would lose a ton of money, and people aren’t going to spend hundreds of hours putting together a youth tournament AND lose tens of thousands of dollars in the process.
No one forces teams to play in the big events. A lot of teams, especially younger age groups, could definitely just play in smaller, local tournaments.
But the idea that you could have large, quality tournaments where you play against good competition from other areas with $15 admission is just not happening.

Never stop preparing.
In ‘24, at @MontiniBBall we played a tricky zone in the playoffs. Right before the bus left, I was watching film + saw a team run a set against it that work. I scribbled in on the back of my play sheet-called it EMERGENCY.
We ran that play to win the game.
Ben McCollum is at his best in the final 24 hours before tip-off, when he crams for the test and usually finds the answers.
