I know he feels he has to say this but the expectations have obviously changed.
Head coach Mike Sullivan's message to #NYR in the aftermath of Igor Shesterkin's injury: "The message is that ht expectations haven't changed. We believe we've got a competitive group. We got to continue to build a team game and we've got to rally around it. I think our guys are excited about playing tonight. We feel like we have very capable guys. We're going to take each game as it comes. We're going to try to put our best game on the ice. We'll see where that takes us."

TBD if one of the people in denial is the General Manager.

The Rangers need to find a warm body to eat minutes in net, but anyone who thinks the Rangers should throw real assets at a Shesterkin replacement is in denial about what this team is capable of this season.

Was already working on a Shesterkin piece but I was operating under an assumption he’d return this season. Suffice to say, this changes everything. I’ll have more tomorrow.

The Rangers didn’t play well tonight but that’s more or less irrelevant. Gotta wait to see if the Shesterkin news is bad news or season-over news.

One example of the limitations of location-based data. Most public models are going to rate this as a mid-level scoring chance (10-15%). However, because Lafreniere carries across the slot and uses Chychrun as a screen, it's a Grade-A. Maybe 25% or so.
Fourth goal of the year for Alexis Lafrenière!

Another way to understand this: Lafrenière uses his feet to create a shot that is roughly equivalent to a breakaway.

Might do a video on what Jaroslav Chmelař has brought to the Rangers this season. He's been very good in a limited role.

Rangers are learning early that it's a lot harder to play against the Capitals than the Red Wings or Islanders.

Potential scenario I will find fascinating: What if the Washington Capitals prove to be a legit contender in the East but 41-year-old Alexander Ovechkin is a total anchor? How will they handle it?

It hasn't been a great start for Ovi: Two-to-one ratio of attempts in the opposition's favor. That's despite very soft usage: 8 offensive zone faceoffs, 7 neutral zone, 0 defensive zone. Maybe it's small sample noise. But what if it isn't? Do they tank their season for optics?

I'm not an expert on analyzing skating by any means but not all "bad" skaters are equal. Some have awful mechanics that are difficult to correct. In other cases, like Perreault, the solution is to just wait for an 18 year old to add muscle and be able to generate more power.
I have no idea how Sullivan can possibly be tolerating Perreault's foot speed issues. Thank God they're 4-1 so he can sweep it under the rug for now...

I’ve written about hockey analytics for 15 years. In that time, I always wanted a site that dug into not only IF a player is good, but when, why, and how. Something to help writers and fans tell those stories. 3 months ago I started building it ... and today, it's live!

The Rangers defending with the opposing goaltender pulled is must-see TV.

Gabe Perreault is playing at a 65-point pace since the 2026 Olympic break; 23 points in 29 games.

Forgot that it's now an 84-game season. Call it a 67-point pace now I guess.

The Rangers don't have enough offense to be hiding Bjorkstrand on the fourth line. The Miller line has struggled to generate anything tonight. Move him back up.
I don't believe in "don't change a winning lineup" because that sounds more like superstition than analysis. But I don't get why NYR made the lineup changes they did. Bjorkstrand looked very good on line 2 vs DET. The PP was generating looks with Miller netfront.

Too many times this period the Rangers have tried to overload in the defensive zone, lost the battle, and then been caught as the puck moves above the goal line. Recipe for disaster.

It's fun to watch Mika Zibanejad playing his game. No mounting criticism. No questions about his contract. The confidence is fully back.
