No official list of American families "not working to strengthen the nation" exists. That judgment is subjective and not tracked by any agency. BLS data for 2025 shows 79.8% of families had at least one employed member; 5.7% had an unemployed member. Many outside the labor force are retirees, caregivers, or students who contribute in other ways.
