Just over a decade ago, the Centre for Ageing Better was created to help society respond to the opportunities and challenges of our nation’s ageing population. To mark the first ten years of our existence, we have created an impact report to highlight the huge range of evidence and insights, networks and resources we’ve created in that time to help shape policy and practice around ageing and demographic change. Working with hundreds of organisations, national and local government, and with a range of industries and sectors, we have sought to explore how we can do things differently and to make this country a better place to grow older in. The Chancellor John Healey has delivered his first Budget speech in Parliament today, describing it as a Budget for the "working people of Britain, for British businesses big and small". We welcome the Chancellor’s confirmation that local authorities will get greater devolved financial powers but are disappointed that nothing has been announced helping people in their 50s and 60s to find work. Absent from the speech was any reference to supporting older workers – even though our NETERs campaign has revealed there are almost 3 million people between 50 and state pension age in this country currently not in employment, training, education or retirement with around one in three of these wanting to be in work. Deputy Director of Work, Retirement and Transitions, Dr Andrea Barry discussed the impact. "Like NEETs, this group can be extremely vulnerable to a difficult labour market. Also, they are regularly victims of ageism in the workplace and face the greatest threats from AI," says Andrea. A year ago, our Chief Executive Dr Carole Easton OBE gave evidence to the @HoCcommitteesUK in Parliament as part of its inquiry into Healthy Ageing: physical activity in an ageing society. Since then, the committee has published its final report and now the government has responded. Overall that government response has been positive, accepting a significant proportion of the report's 15 recommendations. We are particularly delighted to see the government explicitly recognise the paramount importance of prevention as part of the approach to good health as well as the important role that good-quality homes, work and connected communities play. It is also great to see the government reiterate its ambition to improve healthy life expectancy for everyone and halve the gap between the richest and poorest regions, and the need for coordinated action across government to achieve this. However, Ageing Better also believes the government could go further in this important area. While the response acknowledges healthy ageing requires a cross-government approach, there is little indication of who or what will coordinate this. A healthy ageing strategy coupled with a Commissioner for Older People and Ageing in England would enable joined up thinking across government and ensure that giving everyone the best opportunity to age well is a top national priority. A healthy labour market isn't just about how many people are in work. It's about whether people of all ages have the opportunity to participate, contribute and thrive. Too often, conversations about work pit younger and older generations against each other. But many of the barriers facing young people who are NEET and older people who are NETER are strikingly similar, from poor health and insecure work to local labour market inequalities. In her latest piece for LBC, our Deputy Director for Work, Retirement and Transitions, Dr Andrea Barry, argues that creating a labour market that works for one generation means creating one that works for all. The story we tell about retirement is wrong. This is why we have introduces NETER: not in employment, training, education or retirement. Our NETER summary report outlines why we need this measure, how it was built, who is and isn’t NETER and what action should be taken with the information it provides. It offers key insight into the labour market challenges facing people aged 50-SPA and a call to action to tackle these issues. Today marks International Day of Older People (IDOP) and the theme is "What's on your doorstep?" Join us to celebrate the people, places and services that help us to stay active and connected in our community as we age - and show the importance of removing the barriers that prevent older people from taking part. "Working with the UK Network of over 110 Age-friendly Communities, we hear the same things come up again and again as priorities. Things like getting around, staying connected, getting the help and information we need. Many of which can be solved by the right local services and features. That’s why we chose ‘what’s on your doorstep’ as the theme for this year’s IDOP in the UK," says our Deputy Director for Homes and Communities, Natalie Turner. Are you hosting an event, or attending one? Let us know in the comments, and tag us in your photos! 2.9 million people aged 50 to state pension age are NETERs – people aged between 50 and state pension currently not in employment, training, education or retirement. And a growing number of organisations believe they should be more visible in our labour market statistics. Organisations from across the employment, ageing, health and wider social policy sectors have already signed our consensus statement in support of NETER. Together, we're calling for NETER to become a headline labour market measure, helping government better understand who is outside work and why – and take action to support longer working lives. We’re grateful to all those who have added their support. Read our consensus statement to find out who is backing NETER and why: ageing-better.org.uk/resourc… #NETER #Ageing #OlderAge #OlderEmployees #OlderWorkers

Today, the government has announced plans to maintain the State Pension triple lock until 2030 before introducing a new system for how the State Pension increases each year. Any replacement must provide robust protection for pensioners who rely on the State Pension to make ends meet. With almost 16% of pensioners living in relative poverty, and more than a million people relying solely on the State Pension, the government must provide clear evidence that this alternative system will protect both current and future generations from poverty in later life. Read our full statement from Deputy Director for Work, Retirement and Transitions Dr Andrea Barry: ageing-better.org.uk/news/tr… #StatePension #TripleLock #Pensions

What does it really mean when someone aged 50 to state pension age isn’t working? Too often, we assume they’ve retired. But for many people, the reality is very different - they may be managing a long-term health condition, caring for someone, or looking for work but struggling to find it.

That’s why we’ve developed NETER: a new measure covering people aged 50 to State Pension age who are Not in Employment, Training, Education or Retirement. There are 2.9 million NETERs, more than one in five people in this age group. NETER helps us look beyond employment rates and better understand who is outside work, and why. Swipe through to find out more about who NETERs are and why it matters. Find out more about NETERs here: ageing-better.org.uk/neter-n… #NETER #OlderWorkers #OlderEmployers #OlderEmployees #Ageing

Last week, the @UKHouseofLords debated last year's Preparing for an ageing society report. More than six months since the Economic Affairs Committee published its report and more than a decade since a another Lords Committee found that the UK is 'woefully underprepared' for an ageing society, we welcome the continued effort to keep ageing on the political agenda. In particular, it was great to hear so many speakers highlighting the need for a long-term strategy to bring together health, employment, retirement and housing in the context of our ageing society, and a focus on the need to help more people in their 50s and 60s remain in employment. This included Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone who referenced Ageing Better's 'The Looming Retirement Crisis' research which found that more than 900,000 people aged between 50 and state pension age are currently out of employment but would like to be working. There is an overlooked unemployment crisis for people in their 50s and 60s. Through a major new campaign, we want to put this right. Ageing Better's new NETER metric is designed to present a clear figure on the number of people aged between 50 and state pension age Not in Employment, Training, Education or Retirement (NETER).     This currently stands at 2.9 million NETERs in the UK. We are calling on the government to adopt NETER as a headline measure and to use it to drive a new strategy and investment in longer working lives. Our new State of Ageing report shines a spotlight on the older LGBTQ+ community – a population that is often overlooked in data, policy and service provision. 'State of Ageing Spotlight: Older LGBTQ+ people' highlights a need for more tailored service provision for this section of the population, which is growing at a much faster rate than the 50+ population in general. "Many older LGBTQ+ people prefer to access LGBTQ+-led services, but these tend to be only available in places where there are large LGBTQ+ populations, and many voluntary organisations that provide these services are insecurely funded or experiencing funding cuts," says our Research and Analysis Manager, Sarah Wilkinson. Earlier today, we hosted a roundtable with @jrf_uk on data gaps, bringing together experts on older people, demographics, surveys and sampling and participatory research. We discussed which data gaps present the biggest challenges, how data linkage and harmonisation could help address some of these data gaps, and examples of work already underway in this area. Thank you to everyone who attended! #Roundtable #Ageing #AgeingBetter #DataGaps #Age
