Who actually controls your crypto? Having crypto in an app doesn’t necessarily mean you control the private keys. And using a payment card doesn’t mean your entire crypto balance has become custodial. Understanding the difference between self-custody, custodial accounts, and hybrid workflows matters. 🧵

A practical strategy is to separate savings from spending. Keep long-term holdings in a wallet you control. Transfer only the amount you need for card payments. This limits the funds exposed to custodial counterparty risk while giving you access to everyday payment functionality. High card limits don’t mean you need to maintain a large card balance.

He Built a Business Selling Other People’s Secrets. And He Kept Receipts. In 2003, investigators raided the home of a British private detective named Steve Whittamore. What they found was extraordinary. Four color-coded notebooks containing thousands of requests for personal information, including phone numbers, home addresses, vehicle records, and other confidential details. Whittamore had built a network of contacts who could obtain information from sources such as telecommunications companies and government databases. Journalists paid him to find information about people they wanted to investigate. The records covered celebrities, politicians, public figures, and ordinary people. Some information could be obtained legitimately. Other requests involved information that may have been obtained unlawfully, including through deception or improper access to confidential records. In 2005, Whittamore pleaded guilty to offenses under the Data Protection Act. Think about what this means. People had trusted organizations with their personal information, believing it would remain protected. But information held in those systems could become a commodity, passed from one person to another without the subject ever knowing. Your data doesn’t have to be stolen from your own device to be used against your interests. Every organization that holds your information becomes another place where it can potentially be exposed, misused, or shared. That’s why privacy matters. And it’s why being deliberate about what you disclose, which services you trust, and who controls your assets matters, too. You cannot eliminate every risk. But you can be more careful about how much control you hand over. The less unnecessary information you expose, the less there is to misuse. Privacy begins with understanding what you give away. agora.cards

He Shut Down His Entire Email Company Rather Than Hand Over the Keys. In 2013, Ladar Levison faced a decision that could destroy his business. He had built Lavabit, an encrypted email service used by people who wanted to keep their communications private. One of its users was Edward Snowden. Then the US government demanded access to information that could expose communications beyond a single account. Levison fought the demand. Eventually, he made a decision few business owners would make: he shut Lavabit down. On August 8, 2013, he announced the closure, explaining that he could no longer operate the service without compromising what he had built it to protect. His decision came at a cost. His customers lost access to the service, and the legal battle continued. But the episode exposed a fundamental problem with trusting a third party to protect your privacy. What happens when the company holding your data is forced to choose between its customers and the authorities? A privacy promise is only as strong as the system behind it. This is one reason self-custody matters in cryptocurrency. When you control your own private keys, you don’t have to rely on a platform to authorize every transaction. That doesn’t make you immune to legal action or security risks. It changes who holds the keys and who is responsible for protecting them. Levison’s story leaves us with a question worth asking before trusting any service with something important: Does your privacy depend on someone else’s willingness to fight for it? Choose your tools carefully. Understand who controls access. Take responsibility for what you own. agora.cards
