Looking forward to having Chris out at Tallimba this week!
Fumigation timing, ventilation, withholding periods and storage hygiene can all make a difference to how well grain performs in storage.
In the latest GRDC podcast, Ben White and Chris Warrick from the GRDC Grain Storage Extension Team share practical advice on managing stored grain insects, reducing resistance risks and using diatomaceous earth effectively.

It was International Day of Rural Women yesterday.
Behind the ladies luncheons and corporate social post there was something that is rarely talked about.
Rural women (and yes, rural men) working in family owned businesses deserve to be paid.
It’s more relevant in multi generational and multi household family businesses than it is in a business consisting of a married couple with joint ownership and shared goals. I get that. However there is a degree of autonomy and privacy that comes with having your own ‘splurge account’ as the barefoot investor describes it.
There is a direct cost to women working in family businesses. Less sleep, more childcare, less hours in the week for anything else.
There is also the opportunity cost of lost wages, super and career development if she worked elsewhere.
Working in a family business you are born, married into or created is incredibly rewarding. So many farming and rural businesses that I see kicking goals have a women in the family in the leadership team.
It’s rewarding.
It should be remunerated.

GRAIN STORAGE WORKSHOPS
Keeping harvest moving & protecting grain quality
What do you do when the headers are harvesting faster than you can get grain away?
Join Chris Warrick from Primary Business for a practical workshop exploring temporary grain storage options to help keep harvest moving and protect grain quality.
Drawing on experience from the GRDC Stored Grain project, Chris will step through options including:
Grain bunkers, grain bags & sheds
Pest prevention and fumigation
Other on-farm storage solutions
The practical considerations and trade-offs of each option
The workshop will help growers assess which storage option best fits their operation, harvest logistics, grain quality requirements and bottom line.
With above-average yields anticipated in many regions, planning ahead for temporary storage can help keep grain moving and headers harvesting.

Just a little reminder to be careful coding truck registration costs. There is a sneaky bit of GST in there that I am sure you want back.
This is how it works in NSW, not sure about other states.
A great opportunity for some face to face training in #moree. Thanks to @RabobankAU Rabobank's NSW Client Council and @llsnsw North West
Lots of other opportunities coming up in the next couple of months around NSW and VIC
Check them all out at.

We enjoyed some lovely and totally unexpected hospitality from the International Agriculture and Agri-Food Committee at the Calgary Stampede.
The kids were so impressed with their lanyards and we enjoyed a drink and a chat with some lovely Canadian farmers.
That’s half the year over.
A great sign up for our Farm Office Plus course.
Now a chance for some time with family over the school holidays ❤️
30th of June - It's livestock counting day.
Just a reminder to have a think about this important record for the end of the financial year and for those of us in NSW, our stock and land returns for the @llsnsw
You don't have to get them all through the yards, count their legs and divide by four today.
It is useful however to work out, and write down, what you are going to base the count off. It's probably easier on a per mob basis
- Last weeks preg testing for the heifers
- Next weeks drenching for the weaner lambs
- Shearing numbers in two weeks time for the rest of the sheep
Consistency matters, so if you ignored any unmarked stock last year for mobs that were mid lambing or mid calving, do the same this year.
What are your livestock counting tricks?

Family partnerships are really common in ag.
Sometimes they are structured as partnerships but companies, family trusts or even as employer/employee relationships are also common.
Regardless of structure we often have siblings working together, and parents and adult children working together in farming businesses.
One thing that has come up a few times in discussions with our Farm Office Plus group and face to face workshops recently is the issues of inequity in these multi household family businesses.
Now often this is about the big stuff – how land and wealth are divided, however there are a lot of professionals out there that will help with that job.
What I want to talk about, and what I tend to get queries about, are the equity issues around work, pay, and household expenses leading up to and after transition has occurred.
I guess the question is, how can the ongoing operation and the finances of the family business recognise the needs of different families at different life stages. How do we happily work together?
Putting some thought into what you are doing, why you are doing it and how you are going about it is a good start. Hopefully you come up with something like this – a common understanding.
“We like working together, we have different strengths and skills and our business is more successful because of these differences. We know that pooling capital into one business gives us advantages of scale and reduces risk. We try our best to keep things fair.”
With that as a guiding principle, let’s deep dive with a bit of Q & A.......... follow the link
