Eighteen young Kurds from Sulaymaniyah may have drowned in the Mediterranean after leaving Libya for Italy. Their families are still waiting for the truth. But there is nothing mysterious about how people end up dead in that sea.
The Mediterranean did not become a graveyard by accident. Europe made it one.
The EU has spent years criminalising movement and then criminalising rescue. It closes every safe route, funds interception, equips coastguards, and pays dictatorships, militias, and abusive security forces across North Africa to stop human beings before they can reach European soil and claim protection.
In Libya, migrants are imprisoned, tortured, raped, extorted, enslaved, disappeared. The UN has said there are grounds to believe migrants have been subjected to crimes against humanity, including murder, torture, sexual violence, and enslavement. And Europe has still funded, trained, equipped, and politically backed the very machinery that intercepts people at sea and drags them back into that hell.
Then the EU looks at the corpses in the Mediterranean and calls it a “tragic migration crisis.” No. It is not a crisis falling from the sky. It is policy. It is a system. It is a decision: make the route so violent, so degrading, so lethal that people either remain trapped in Libya and Tunisia or disappear at sea.
Europe pays the worst scums on earth to do their dirty work, then washes its hands and gives lectures about democracy, the green transition, human rights, dignity, and the sanctity of life.
