A vanishingly rare appearance, to mention that my new book, Nicking Ben Cloppers, is available for pre-order and will be published in kindle and paperback editions on 31 January. The astonishing final adventure of Detective Daintypaws. I hope you enjoy it mybook.to/cloppers

Saw this when I was 9 and part of me still thinks of it as the height of glamour and romance.

This makes it sound like an ecclesiastical manhunt. The 39 Steps but with robes and a big hat.

This week, three people have initiated DM chat with me on a "certain other platform". And I'm so used to the hellscape that is this place that I initially assumed they were all bots, scammers, unglued, or perhaps all three. Instead I seem to have made three new friends. Great!

I've loved lots of stuff Timothy West did, from Tales of the Unexpected to canal shows, but the very first thing was an audiobook of Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts, with him and Prunella Scales. I wore out the tape on long childhood car journeys. RIP.

This Armistice Day, THE SMILING MAN is available for pre-order. The second volume in CHANTECOQ 1916, the action centres on the front line. Written and published while the First World War raged across Europe, it was an hounour to translate this book. bklnk.com/B0DMMQ3QP5

We watched #Nye last night - a belter of a new play from @NationalTheatre. It's currently free to watch on YouTube but it's coming down (at some point) today. Michael Sheen in the role he was born to play.

Bit of a rough week, but now my favourite episode of Red Dwarf is up next on BBC2. Perfect timing.

The place that almost always elects arseholes elected an arsehole.

It wasn't even a bad episode, as Covid-era Who goes, but "I hope I meet you again, Mary Seacole," does ring out almost as a metatextual admission that they knew they were kind of shortchanging an important historical figure.
