Congrats to Anne Carson who has been awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in Literature "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." Carson taught at Princeton University in the 1980s and was recently on campus to deliver the 2025 Fagles Lecture. Her presentation, titled "Beware the man whose handwriting sways like a reed in the wind," mixed memoir, classical translation, art criticism, boxing exhibition, and performance art in a personal meditation on life and death in the wake of her diagnosis with Parkinson's disease. Like previous Fagles Lecturers, Carson taught a special session of the undergraduate Humanities Sequence course "Interdisciplinary Approaches to Western Culture," whose students read Carson's Sappho translations, If Not, Winter (2002) as part of their syllabus. Carson's lesson plan involved dividing class attendees into small groups of three or four and asking them to leave the classroom for ten minutes spent in search of a "border," physical or otherwise, they could then "redefine." The 2021 winner of the Magnitsky Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalist is Catherine Belton. She has exposed the crimes of the Putin regime in ways that nobody has ever done before. She’s now paid a very dear price in their retaliation with multiple abusive libel suits

How can mediators make peace processes more inclusive? Inviting citizens into the room is only a start. Mediators also need to understand what communities value, fear and might accept in a peace settlement. Putin didn't invade Ukraine because of NATO. He invaded because Ukrainians were proving democracy works. Historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum puts it plainly: Putin looked at Ukraine's democratic movement and thought, "If they can do it in Ukraine, then people could do it in Russia. So I need to crush this." That's the real threat Ukraine posed. Not missiles. Not borders. A working democracy next door. Applebaum frames the war as a fault line between the democratic and autocratic worlds. Russia isn't just trying to take territory. It's trying to erase Ukraine as a nation, reduce it to a colony, and send a message to every country that the post-1945 rules of Europe no longer apply. Those rules were simple: no invasions, no wars, borders don't change by force. Russia understood exactly what it was breaking when it crossed into Ukraine.

I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning. What we can say for sure is that this is the kind of random and senseless attack Ukrainians are enduring every day - even on civilian railways. So far Putin has been responsible for the deaths of 1700 staff of Ukrzaliznytsia - Ukrainian Railways. They and their daily passengers are absolutely heroic. When are we going to give them the air defences they need? Why won’t we unfreeze Putin’s cash and give it to Ukraine? There is more than €140 billion in a Belgian bank account - and about £10 billion in London. Britain could show a lead. The Ukrainians are going to win - that much was clear from the last three days in their wonderful country. But we will get this dreadful war over much faster if we all get serious and give them what they need and deserve.

The principal Russian war aim, after all, is to make sure that there is no longer a separate Ukraine, and therefore no Ukrainian culture, language or books.
Russia is methodically destroying Ukrainian publishing houses and books. More than 60,000 books burned down as a result of today's strikes alone.
