Looking for leaders in infectious disease modeling and analytics for roles as Branch Chiefs in the Predict Division of @CDCgov Ctr for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics usajobs.gov/job/701324000 posted as Supervisory Data Scientist GS-15. Seeking great people to join a great team!
Exciting to see #wastewatersurveillance used to identify a highly drug resistant/emerging fungal infection, Candida auris, & genetic/epi-link to cases in area (first ever case wasnt until 2021). Great use of #WWS infrastructure for #AMR monitoring.

Excited to share our state #publichealth experience rapidly adapting #wastewatersurveillance for realtime #Mpox response in California, including early alert to communities/MDs without known cases, test/vax resource allocation &directing PH response.

A great example of how impt strong PH, academic (@StanfordWoods / @EmoryRollins) & private partnerships (@Verily) are, w/MPox assay validated & deployed just weeks of 1st case (when MPXV shedding into WW still unknown).

⚠️SF Bay is experiencing a Red Tide. These appear reddish-brown & can cause impacts, particularly for fish. This weekend the Water Boards recommends people/ pets avoid contact w/water during dense blooms or discoloration in water. Visit our HABs Portal: bit.ly/2J2PqXL
Simple, innovative methods to understand dz burden (#typhoid) & inform PubHealth.
'If there is a vax, why aren't countries using it?
Low/middle-inc. countries make difficult decisions about which vax to prioritize. Biggest obstacle to adopt a vax is lack of surveillance data'
This @StanfordMed article describes how our Research Director Steve Luby & #GlobalHealth Faculty Fellow @JasonAndrewsMD have developed new method to quickly estimate typhoid prevalence in a country, allowing for more informed efforts to combat the disease. scopeblog.stanford.edu/2022/…
Excellent thread demonstrating how #wastewater can help fill the gaps in case data, to show us how much #COVID transmission/cases there really are circulating in the community right now. Case data can mislead if testing is low but, well, everyone poops!
#WBE
Important to note that case data is hugely undercounting this surge. COVID testing has slowed and shifted to unreported antigen tests. Plots like below can mislead because the current surge looks so much lower than January. But #wastewater data reveals the true levels. (1/4)
Imptly though, ww data has its own caveats. Fecal shedding (& thus WW concentration) also diff by variant & immunity we have from vax & prior infxn.
One data point 2 track variants like #BA5 with less delay than traditional whole genome sequencing is through #wastewater. Both assays and sequencing of wastewater samples can help give estimates of community COVID VOC transmission.

For >60yrs, car accidents were No.1 cause of deaths in US in kids 1-24y/o. In 2017, guns took over (10k deaths: 2020). This is not only due to 40%↓ in car deaths from continual efforts to make cars safer, but also due to 45%↑ in gun deaths.

Wastewater contains a treasure trove of information for monitoring public health.
In our new paper, we solve several lab and computational bottlenecks to achieve timely, accurate, and cost-effective SARS-CoV-2 surveillance using wastewater sequencing. nature.com/articles/s41586-0…
Impt step in evolution of #WBE/Wastewater Surveillance is variant monitoring.
Excited to be small part of this @nature paper, where ww sequencing ID'd VOCs accurately, quickly & helped ID specific transmission events & cryptic community transmission.

Excited to share our latest wastewater sequencing paper out in @Nature where we show early detection of variants through wastewater sequencing and uncover cryptic transmission events not detected via clinical surveillance (1/3)

Congrats @smruthi_karthik @josh__levy @SASEAsystem @KnightLabNews @K_G_Andersen @UCSanDiego @SanDiegoCounty @CAPublicHealth and many many others on their hard work on this, advancing this science for public health use!
I am honored to have been a part of the @MGHMedicine family, led by the heart and soul of this singularly beautiful and incredible physician, healer, teacher, and human.
much to say about today but focusing on a celebration of a legend in medicine. blessed to be a part of the @MGHMedicine family “raised” by this one of a kind person - the very best of humans who made us all better. Unveiling of a beautiful portrait that will be forever at #mgh
