A really important mobilisation and demonstration in support of independent public media in Czechia. I truly believe this has a chance of success against the government. Please share and amplify!
Musicians from the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (SOČR) play as Czech Radio / @CRozhlas staff and supporters set off em masse for Wenceslas Square for this afternoon’s demonstration in support of independence for the country’s public broadcasters.

This map shows quite clearly what the Russians had in mind in terms of a successful conquest of Ukraine: annexation of about 40% of the country and subordination of the rest. It's from a leaked presentation of May 2022, circulated by the closely Putin-linked oligarch Konstantin Malofeev, describing the absorption of southern and eastern Ukraine into Russia and the systematic redistribution of its ports and industries among Russian oligarchs. Russia seems to have intended to seize most of the industrialised areas of Ukraine, leaving the less valuable (and more Ukrainian-speaking) rural and agricultural regions under the control of a rump, landlocked Ukrainian state governed by a pro-Moscow regime. It's safe to assume that Russia would also have taken over Moldova at some point.
Actually quite curious what a 100% successful Russian invasion of Ukraine would’ve looked like; IE would they have even bothered with occupying western Ukraine

There’s a lot of confusion around Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal crisis. Here’s what you must know: 1. The Polish Constitutional Tribunal is not a lawful court The CJEU has ruled that it is not a tribunal previously established by law, owing to serious irregularities in the appointment of three judges and its President (C-448/23, 18 Dec 2025). The ECtHR (Xero Flor v Poland, 2021) and the Venice Commission reached the same conclusion. 2. Restoring judicial independence is a legal obligation, not Tusk's caprice Articles 2 and 19(1) TEU require every Member State to guarantee independent courts, because: (i) National courts are part of the EU’s system of judicial protection, (ii) their decisions affect all Europeans. The President’s refusal to receive the oaths of four of the six judges elected by the Sejm in March 2026, and the Tribunal leadership’s refusal to let them sit, prompted an ECtHR interim measure in May requiring that nothing hinder them from taking up and exercising their functions. 3. EU law offers no blueprint, but the Commission and the EU courts can check the chosen methods Appointing Maciej Berek, a minister until weeks earlier and Tusk’s “right-hand man”, to the bench contradicts the government’s pledge to depoliticise the Tribunal. The Friday suspension of the Tribunal’s president and vice-president, ordered by one judge and accompanied by a police presence outside the building, is not in itself a “coup”: the stated aim is to restore a lawfully functioning court. But restoring the rule of law must itself be done lawfully. 4. The EU has weakened its own leverage. In February 2024, it released up to €137bn in suspended funds on the strength of promises, before durable change was secured. What the EU could do is to reopen an Article 7 TEU procedure against Poland. 5. No: this is not a two-sided, symmetrical dispute If the Polish government is trying to repair an institution captured under PiS, its opposition is striving to retain some control through illegal means. Bottom line: restoring judicial independence is a legal duty, and the methods chosen by the Polish government deserve scrutiny. Equating the two sides, or reading that scrutiny as opposition to restoring the Tribunal, is, therefore, deeply misleading.

#OTD 1985. At Bournemouth, Neil Kinnock takes on Militant in his conference speech. He credits the Labour movement with giving him “the life chance of moving out of a pest and damp-infested set of rooms into a decent home, built by a Labour council under a Labour Government”.

The news of yet another botched execution in the US (this time Christa Pike in Tennessee) is stomach churning. Nobody, whatever they have done, should be treated with such wanton cruelty. The whole episode brings shame on the US criminal justice system.

Tomorrow I will be in Niederschlesien/Dolny Śląsk in a town that still looks German. The trauma of the expelees was real and should not be mocked. Neither can post war expulsions of ethnic Germans be seen in isolation from earlier ethnic cleansing and forced population movements

Remember this next time ru casts itself as "defender of Christians" in Ukraine. To boot, the destroyed church building belonged to the church in Ukraine, which is still aligned with ROC.
Putin’s forces destroyed the 300-year-old Holy Presentation Church in Kherson region. Built in 1725 without metal nails, it was Ukraine’s only surviving example of 18th-century Cossack wooden church architecture.

8 wickets down so the father of a Derby based friend with tickets for the Sunday said "it'll all be over in 10 minutes. Not worth going." So they didn't. She still hasn't got over it!

And on the subject of Communist Czechoslovakia and British academics maybe a good time for the @BBC to show Professional Foul?
Sad to hear of the death of Sir Anthony Kenny, Master of @BalliolOxford who I got to meet once a term at Handshaking (which didn't involve shaking his hand). He was the last survivor of the Prague 3 deported from Czechoslovakia in 1981 fo teaching at the underground university.
