BREAKING: DEMONSTRATIONS AT 22 @STARBUCKS STORES ACROSS 11 STATES CALL ON COFFEE GIANT TO STOP LYING ABOUT PLASTICS RECYCLING The demonstrations in Massachusetts, New York, Arizona, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, California, Illinois, Colorado, Washington and Texas are part of a Starbucks Week of Action urging the company to stop telling customers that its single-use plastic cold cups are “widely recyclable,” after a nationwide tracking investigation by Beyond Plastics could not confirm a single cup being recycled. Beyond Plastics, its partners, and demonstrators nationwide are calling on Starbucks to: -Stop portraying its single-use plastic cold cups as “widely recyclable” when the company cannot demonstrate that the cups are actually being recycled at scale. -Remove images and messaging that may lead customers to believe Starbucks plastic cups placed in store recycling bins will be recycled. -Honor existing Starbucks policy of providing reusable cups for beverages consumed inside the store. -Replace plastic cups for their cold drinks with fiber-based cups. “Customers who carefully put their Starbucks cup into a recycling bin with an image of a plastic cold cup on it reasonably expect it to be recycled,” said @enckj, president of Beyond Plastics and a former EPA regional administrator, who plans to join the demonstration at an Albany, NY, store Saturday. “Our investigation found something very different. Not one of the cups we successfully tracked was confirmed recycled. Starbucks needs to stop misleading customers about plastic recycling and focus instead on reducing single-use plastic and expanding reusable and plastic-free alternatives.”

Beyond Plastics conducted a three-month nationwide tracker investigation to test @starbucks' claim that its single-use polypropylene (No. 5 plastic) cold beverage cups are recyclable. Not a single tracked cup ended up at a recycling facility. Misleading customers about plastic recycling deflects from the real issue: growing plastic production that contributes to the plastic pollution crisis and its harm, especially to environmental justice communities where production plants, petrochemical facilities, landfills, and incinerators are often sited. The real solution to this massive waste problem is not in recycling plastic, but in companies like Starbucks using less of it, investing in reusable cups and foodware, and incorporating safer, more sustainable packaging when disposable packaging is unavoidable. Sign our petition to ask Starbucks to reduce its use of single-use plastic at beyondplastics.org/actions/s… Help us get 5,000 signatures! We're over halfway there.

The Governor's executive order is a step forward but differs from the RDCD Act. Points - Excludes data centers using up to 50 MW - Exceptions for certain institutions - Moratorium lasts up to one year vs. a mandated year - No protections for renewable materials or union wages

The governor proves they run New York like an authoritarian, solely deciding which laws will (v few) / won’t (almost all) be implemented or enforced, directs agencies to say that the climate law & justice are met with no proof & overrules process to give us away to gas & nukes.

This is why it’s utter nonsense that prices “will go up” if we reduce packaging. The same bad faith argument that we need the most expensive (and rising) fossil fuels for “energy affordability”. Stop listening to nonsense- let’s do what helps New Yorkers and our environment.
Historically high plastics prices are another reason to use more recycled content in packaging and less plastic overall in packaging. PRRIA will save companies and consumers money in the long run. msn.com/en-us/money/savingan…

Aw, the guy who has anti-democratically refused to call votes on bills passed out of all committees, like NY HEAT Act and Packaging Reduction Act, even though they had enough votes to pass just from co-sponsors, is upset NOW about process and how heavy handed the governor is??
“There is no budget deal,” Democratic Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie tells reporters immediately after @GovKathyHochul. “I don’t care what the governor says,” when asked if the final # is $268B spending plan.

And frankly, do you know how many times we’ve heard this guy tell us he won’t do policy in the budget? When in reality lots of policy is done in the budget including these SEQRA and CLCPA rollbacks, just never good things to protect New Yorkers are.

What trash science and reporting. How can you directly connect the particulate matter only to vehicles when -BUILDINGS ARE 40% of the pollution -we simultaneously just went through the coldest winter in decades, requiring more fuel burned to heat. nytimes.com/2026/05/06/nyreg…

Probably means it’s saving 20% of the pollution, but buildings increased 22% (if you’re entitled to conjecture, we are, too). Absolute rubbish.
13
NY spends $1B a year moving trash to already overburdened landfills. That’s absurd. It’s time to cut waste, remove toxic chemicals from packaging and hold large corporations accountable for the costs they create. Let’s stop footing the bill for big business and pass PRRIA.

This is the company governor Hochul goes to the mat to keep, thwarts every attempt to reform (went after Dem electeds trying to fix it- all now out of office). They never meet their required minimum metrics and requested they be easier-sound familiar? newsday.com/long-island/poli…

Yes very familiar, like the climate law according to her, with minimum requirements she never attempted are “too burdensome”. She sees this utility as her patronage dump, those protecting ratepayers are punished & excommunicated, and only loyalists may serve, but ONLY serve her.

Dear NY State Democratic Majority. Remember how you were bashed for bail reform? Get ready if you vote to undo the climate law and SEQRA in the budget. Our contemporaries are wimps making deals with you. We’re not. We’ve NOTHING to lose except terrible leadership! Saddle up.

Everyone should be aware our organization has ONE partisanship - to the climate. Others’ partisanship is to whoever is in power and it sure pays well for them to pretend and brag their “relationships” with the governor and legislators are some kind of magic - but

it’s always the pledge and the turn, and never the prestige. This is why the tiny little change that has passed has not been implementednn in 6 years. They actually just give cover to useless politicians.

Students say that having to pass classes to graduate is so unfair! Yes, we know they had 4 years, but they never got around to it. Sounds like we must cut the graduation requirements and timelines! @GovKathyHochuli is the student. This is about her ignoring the climate law.
21
Our affordability crisis wasn’t caused by our climate goals or policies that haven’t even been implemented yet. It is caused by our continued dependence on fossil fuels.

Hi Kids, Remember. If you ignore a law for years you had every opportunity to comply with, but refused to, and they finally catch you and win in court, continue to commit that crime, and blame the victim and anyone enforcing a law, like @GovKathyHochul! cityandstateny.com/policy/20…

💯 Hochul’s adopted her former Trump-y opponents stances and rhetoric on climate at the state level.
