I would fly first class with $4k left in my savings.
When I started @dealroom_media, I flew to SF to meet potential clients and booked a first-class seat I had no business buying.
It rewired my brain.
For the first time, I felt like I deserved to be in a room with big founders.
I pitched with more confidence than I ever had.
48 hours after landing, I’d closed $180k in ARR.
Most founders hold themselves back from that kind of luxury, but mindset is everything.
Here are my rules for spending:
- Pay to sit next to people who are 10x ahead of you
- Pay for anything that makes your goal feel close instead of far away
- Only pay for luxury if it gets you closer to your long-term goal

Sent 9 messages, asked me "why i'm ghosting her" and randomly called me to MAKE sure i was joining.
But it got better...
i reached out to @OisinO a close friend and mentor... to see what he thought about Alix joining shown

I’m excited to announce I left my dream job to become the Head of Growth at @shownmedia - the agency behind @canva, @WithCoverageInc, and @Slash's biggest launches.
A few months ago, @mattepstein texted me out of nowhere. "We should chat about sales. You're really good at it. I'd love your thoughts."
I figured it was a quick call to pick my brain.
But the more I learned about what Shown Media was doing- engineering viral launches, generating tens of millions in pipeline for their clients- the more I couldn't stop thinking about it.
I'll be honest- I was skeptical at first.
Matt is 23. I didn't know if I could take a leap on someone that young.
But every conversation proved me wrong. He built a $13M+ agency in under two years. 100 people. Emmy winners. Ex-Mr. Beast creatives. And he understood distribution and virality at a level that made me rethink everything I thought I knew about marketing.
Here's what made this so hard: I had to leave what was once my dream job.
I was the top sales hire at Hampton, closing $4.6M+ in ARR in just over a year. Some of my closest friends work there. Every day I got to chat with the most ambitious founders and help them find their people. @juliapintar @brianschardt @shamusmadan @oliverbrocato @joshsuggss to name a few
But I kept asking myself one question: what if I could help founders grow their actual businesses and put millions of eyes on the thing they're building.
That's exactly what Shown Media does.
The last time I felt this kind of pull was when I cold emailed Travis Kalanick and joined CloudKitchens with less pay, little equity, and no guarantee.
That bet changed my entire career.
This one feels the same.
