OptimumV from Financial Mentor is now live.
This strategy is based on a similar core algorithm as FM's Optimum3, the most widely followed strategy on our platform, but tilts the portfolio towards assets suited to the current economic state. allocatesmartly.com/financia…

Does More History Help? A Market-Regime HMM and the Trouble with Out-of-Sample Evaluation
This article investigates whether longer historical training periods improve the out-of-sample performance of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) used for identifying financial market regimes. Four four-state Gaussian HMMs are compared, differing only in the starting point of their training data (1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000), while being evaluated on the same test period. The model uses five market-based features capturing volatility, drawdowns, credit conditions, and sector rotation to identify latent risk regimes.
The results show that selecting models solely by out-of-sample likelihood can lead to misleading conclusions, favoring shorter training histories that fail to capture crisis regimes. When evaluated using regime stability, economic interpretability, and strategy-based metrics, the model trained on the longest history provides better generalization and avoids overfitting.
The study highlights that validation methodology and evaluation criteria are as important as model design and data length when assessing regime-based investment models.

We opted not to track Carlson's Adaptive 60/40, but it is surprisingly tax efficient; even more so than B&H 60/40 thanks to reduced reliance on tax inefficient UST funds.
~88% of historical gains would have come from LT CG and qual dividends vs 84% for B&H.

In this blog post, I analyze that trading strategy (rationale, performances) and I propose a variation based on the Probabilistic Sharpe Ratio to weight momentum signals.

Taming the Wildcard: David Varadi's "Inflation Compass" [@AllocateSmartly] dlvr.it/TTv4sd
Our test of David Varadi's "Inflation Compass"
This is a very aggressive strategy, often holding just a single stock market sector. We add a decade-plus of data to the author's original test, and discuss potential risks to future performance.allocatesmartly.com/taming-t…
This is an interesting spin on David Varadi's previous "Growth and Inflation Model".
David is a great source for novel ideas like this. Working with him now to perfect our replication of this new model. Should be released soon.

Investing in "Distressed" TAA Strategies (Redux) [@AllocateSmartly] dlvr.it/TTXcbM
We test investing in "distressed" Tactical Asset Allocation strategies. Is there any benefit selecting strategies that are nearing their previous max drawdown?

Analysis of Tactical Asset Allocation strategies for our Spanish-speaking audience. Yago does good work.
"Since 1957, the 10 largest stocks in the S&P 500 have underperformed an equal-weighted index of the remaining 490 stocks by 2.4% per year. But the last decade has been a very notable departure from that trend, with the largest 10 outperforming by a massive 4.9% per year on average."
