The GDR is remembered in the West as a surveillance state and nothing else. Jenny Farrell, who grew up there, argues that the erasure is deliberate, and that what was destroyed after 1990 is precisely what made an alternative social order thinkable.

Before 1798. Before rebellion. Before the mayhem & executions.
🇫🇷 There was Paris! 🔥
▪️18th Nov, 1792, radicals & revolutionaries gathered at ‘White’s Hotel’ there, at 8 Passage des Petits-Pères…but crucially, about twenty Irishmen were present.
Among the Irish were Lord Edward FitzGerald, Henry and John Sheares, William Jackson, Nicholas Madgett, William Duckett, Bernard MacSheehy and many others.
▪️Thomas Paine was the guest of honour!
🕺That night after toasts Lord Fitzgerald stands up and publicly cast aside his aristocratic title and demanded to be called simply:
‘Citoyen Edouard Fitzgerald’-
— CITIZEN FITZGERALD 💚
An Irish lord & GGrandson of King Charles 2nd had just chosen revolution and Irish self determination over privilege & tyranny.
▪️Paris had just lit the fuse and became the “secret origins of Irish revolutionary republicanism”… it was now game on!
La route vers 1798 passait par Paris!🔥
